Dipstick popping up
I have had an issue with my oil dipstick rising about an inch from its sitting position every time my 418W revs to 4000-5000 rpm. I have dual K&N breathers and a PVC valve. Has anyone experienced this and did you have a solution?

Bill, I don't have the same issue but I did see an easy solution. I saw a car at a show where the guy drilled a small hole at the end of the dip stick handle. Then slipped in a carb return spring (or even a smaller, less stiff one) and wound the opposite end around the base of an alternator bracket or somewhere else. Kept the stick in tension all the time.

Mine does the exact same thing. Its the tube vibrating and the dipstick moves up a little.
You can add another bracket/clamp to the tube, or increase the tension of the clip or just shove it back periodically.

Bill: A very tidy way to correct it is with a 2" length of fuel line slipped over the tube into which the dipstick also is inserted.

You might also want to try bending the end of the dipstick itself toward the side of the pan.

Surely bending the dipstick itself would result in false readings as you would be raising the end of it higher in the oil pan?
This would mean you would be using more oil to hit the 'FULL' level.

I have never had that problem but have seen several others who have and various solutions. The easiest seemed to be get another dipstick with just a bit smaller cap on top or to crimp the cap on the one you have so it fastens better. Rick's idea of the fuel line should work as that would put a little rubber on the outside of the tube for it to fit over. I wouldn't bend it.

If it stays popped up for more than 4 hours see a mechanic....and stop taking the Viagra!
What kind of crankcase venting do you use?

Do you really think an 1/8" difference on the reading is a problem? I don't add oil by the tablespoon to keep it right on the full mark.

Totally agree that 1/8" isnt a problem (although I dont see any reference to 1/8" in the earlier post). I was diplomatically trying to say that bending things to keep them in place maybe isn't the preferred route.
Each to his own...

I prefer those pretty blue ends on the Ford Motorsport wires,IMHO, that's about all there are good for anyway... When I switched from the Motorsport wires to the MSD wires, the difference was very, very noticeable from the first time I cranked over the motor, it started quicker and idled and ran much better and all I did was change the plug wires and the Motorsport wires were less than a year old..........
Another thing you might do (I did this once and it worked like a charm) is take out the dipstick and take a CLEAN small center punch and stick it in the dipstick tube and give it a couple of light taps, this should open or flair the top of the tube slightly making the dipstick fit tighter on the tube.......

Since it only happens when the rpm's are up, it sounds like too much crank case pressure. Simple vibration would also bring it up, but it would be more time dependant rather than rpm's
If that is the case, I would not try to secure the dipstick. That pressure has to go somewhere. Since the tube is the easiest route, that's where it will go. If you secure the tube, it will go somewhere else, like through a pan gasket, or RMS.
I would try and vent the crank case better.

Just like what they keep telling us on late night TV......SIZE does matter.
Thank you David
