T.I.T. Oper. Comfort help needed/N Dallas
Putting together 351W for 290 - 300 hp. Very mild--nothing over-the-top but quality is key.
Professionally-built shortblock needs everything. Any KNOWLEDGABLE help would be appreciated. Cleanliness is next to Godliness on this one. And I am going to avoid "too many cooks in the kitchen".
Cam and timing set, fuel pump eccentric installed.
Heads--Kim Barr Racing went through them beautifully. Need valves and seals reinstalled; have the tools, keepers, and rockers. Install and torque correctly. Time consuming. Can be done at your place.
Front cover--new; needs crank seal popped in, water pump installed, fresh gaskets. Black paint. Help figure out what length bolts are needed to afix it to the front of motor (NO LEAKS!). Pulleys and correct V belt. Alternator mounted. Can be partially done at your place.
Initial test run--hang dummy T5 tranny on back, firing order set, oiled and primed, wired up, radiator attached. Listen/adjust rockers for smooth run. Set vacuum screws on carb. Break in hyd flat-tap. cam(?). Check for leaks. Check fan belt alignment. Thermostat opens--runs cool.
Load up for San Antonio--drain fluids ( oil, coolant, gas), seal heads and openings for possible long-term storage, remove test stand covers and install good valve covers/gaskets, re-torque, move to portable engine stand, load on trailer.
Any help? Where are you gifted? Prior experience/knowledge a must. Pick a task--git er done. Small kids around so no bad language or late nights. Short shifts less than an hour. Neighbors are sound sensitive, so test run during daylight hours with mufflers.
Garage near Custer/380, McKinney / Frisco area. Should go together real fast with a few extra hands. If we finish it before Thanksgiving, Kim Barr or Jeff White (Smiley's Racing) will dyno it and do further break-in work.
Much of it going together this coming weekend (hopefully) and the next. I am a professor and work Mon thru Thurs, off on Fridays usually building on cars.
Oh, thank you!
Let me know,
Paul

WTG Paul
Paul,
Very nice. I was going to tell you I have a set of March pulleys for 351 but looks like you have that covered. You have a new member in the DFW area, James Wagner and he's a first class motor man. Look him up but you have to squeeze him in between grandchildren. Wish we could be there to help out but our weekends are jammed up here preparing for Dec 12th. Lots of fund raisers etc. Best of luck and thanks again for all your help with this, the Operation Comfort guys will love it.
God Bless,
Bill

I could use the pulleys; the set I am using is beaten up pretty good. Three bolt crank/balancer pattern. Be great if it includes unique 351 W alternator bracket AND are serpentine. Perhaps even install them discretely at the event.

Pulleys
Prof:
I just went and looked at the pulleys. Alternator, water pump and crank, all in great condition. The crank pulley is 4 bolt pattern though and V-belt. If you can find a way to make it work, it's yours. I'll box it up and mail it to you.

Have several balancers with various bolt patterns. 4 bolt is not a problem. Your set looks great!

I claim zero knowledge but I am right around the corner. Be glad to help just let me know. I think I may have an alt bracket sitting around somewhere. I'll look tomorrow.

Got them. Look great. Engine is buttoned up ready to test run and break in. Talked to Lone Star yesterday regarding the logistics of delivery.

Paul:
Steve Zepeda of Zepeda Carbs is going to build a carb for this motor. Please get me all the specs on the motor so I can forward to him. Thanks again for you kind donation.

Paul:
Thanks very much for all your hard work. The motor looks great.
Bill
--------------------------------
Took several long stretches of hours to get the motor buttoned up to run. Many donations came in that will make this motor "da bomb" for the soldier build.
*John Ross--custom Lokar dipstick, Water/overflow tank
*Dallas Mustang--short-throw shifter, Fel-Pro gasket set
*Houston Cobra guy--March pulley set
*Carb specialist--Holley 750 (future)
*NAPA--Holley fuel pump
The 351W came to life Monday after figuring out that the new MSD coil was bad. The motor immediately settled into a smooth idle with only one adjustable rocker needing a twist. Set idle screws at 17 hg of vacuum--perfect. Snappy response. It runs, revs, smooths out, excites the ears, and if it would cook and do laundry, it would be the perfect wife! Ha.
The engine has now been removed from the test stand, head bolts re-torqued, oil drained, and is being wrapped for transport to LoneStar. An additional bag of goodies goes with the engine--can of black engine paint, Black RTV for sealing valve covers after break-in, Lucas Oil hi- zinc engine break-in additive, chrome Ford Motorsport air cleaner, etc. Small tags attached to engine inform the builders of firing order, TDC, cam break-in procedure, required oil capacity, etc.
I wish there was a better Ford after-market single-wire alternator than the low-output one on there. I wish I had an engine dolly for the motor. I wish for a cool T5 shifter knob. I wish the PCV valve had a 90 degree elbow to neatly route the hose close to the intake. I wish there was a hot rodder's ferrite magnet (Summit or NAPA) mounted to the bottom of the oil pan (or gripping the filter) to catch additional metal filings that this new motor will produce (pic).
See y'all in San Antonio on Dec. 12.
Paul
