Title, tax, insurance, inspection questions

I am in Dallas, just became a first time owner. I have already met a few of you in the DFW area, look forward to meeting many more of you in the coming months and years. I bought a new Superformance from Keith Craft, will have it later this week. He is going to assign the Superformance Manufacturers' Statement of Origin to me.

What are the things I need to know about title, tax, insurance, and inspection? Can/should I get it titled as a 1965? Any way to minimize tax? If State Farm won't treat me right on insurance, can you recommend someone who insures these cars? Any way to get temporary plates so I don't have to just look at (and not drive) this car until the permanent plates arrive? How can I avoid modern emissions standards on inspection? Is there a good place in the DFW area for inspection of these cars? If you prefer phone to thread reply or PM, my cell is 214-704-6829.

Conventional auto insurance carriers are not always the cheapest or best suited. Try Robin at Midwest Classics. http://www.midwestclassicins.com/cobrains.htm He knows these cars very well and their carrier is AM Best rated.

What would be good to have is a report from a Texas SPF or BDR owner who bought a new TKM chassis and had the drivetrain put in custom. Were you able to finesse the 6.25% state tax?

I have a call in to Robin. Sammy, I talked to Dan this afternoon. He has an original '60s Shelby Cobra, and therefore, my respect, very knowledgeable about Cobra insurance.

I am going to pay the sales tax. I understand that if I built this car, I might be able to avoid that, but I didn't, so I won't. Martha Stewart is whispering in my ear.

I talked to a Dallas DMV person today. Ton of forms. I have to get the car photographed, weighed, etc. Shelly, in Keith's office, is helping on a lot of this. Big hassle, but one time only.

And have I mentioned . . . huge resources and information on this site.

We would be glad to help you with the insurance on your Cobra, if you need a reference just ask the people you bought it from or many of the members of this site we have insured. As far as registration it does not matter to us and the rate is the same 2010 or 1965 but if you can register it as a 1965 you could be ahead of the game if you decide to sell it or trade it for a different car down the road.

No sales tax the first time you register an assemlbed vehicle in Texas. Total registration should be about $108.00. On the application for texas title under taxes, check exempt and write "assemlbed by applicant". Even if KC assembled you orchastrated the act. There is thread on here which tells you all the forms you need to a search. If you pay sales taxes you gave away the money and the citizens of Texas appreciate it.
