That's great news. It would be even better if that SOB Ecclestone would retire and take all of his pollitical kiss-a$$ cronies with him

F1: Austin, Texas To Host US GP
Dont get me wrong, I think this is great. I am all ready trying to get tickets.
But this line makes me say WTF, Over:" “ Austin features that rare combination of ideal geographic location and beauty. Its fine dining, world-renowned hospitality and excellent transportation infrastructure make Austin ideally suited to host and manage an event of this magnitude."
Fine transportation. Some body has not been on I35 at 5:30 pm going through down town. I see a Charlie Foxtrot going too and coming home from the race.

I was sorry to see F1 leave Indy, although our track is just too small to generate any real racing. The crowds are big and diverse, they are excited and exuberant, and they spend a lot of money. Good for you Austin, I think you'll enjoy them.
Now, Bernie is a ass bag and don't be surprised if he screws your city and the owners of the course. Maybe he'll be gone by the time the track is built. I hope so for your sake.

A "Ten year contract" with Bernie? Remember, a contract is only as good as the parties who are bound by it! When Bernis decides that Austin does not fit his plans anymore, he will pack up and go.

Don't count your chickens yet. Not that I wouldn't want to see it, but every year around here they talk about a new track for this or that. Until I see the land bought and construction nearly finished, it's a pipe dream to me. Texas Motor Speedway in College Station couldn't make it and it had NASCAR, USAC and CanAm racing there. Now it rots away with only small road racing events that nobody knows about. What a shame!

Comparing TWS to a new F1 track in Austin is not even close to a fair comparison. TWS was built long before NASCAR had any television money to subsidize the losing proposition of a super speedway in the middle of nowhere. Arguably, South Central Texas was not then "NASCAR country" in the way that Talladega or Darlington is/was. The median income in College Station in the 70's was probably $10k/yr. Its $200k/yr now in Austin. There is ONE road running past TWS and until recently it wasn't even four lanes. The closest major airport to TWS is 90 miles away. The list goes on. I am not bashing CS or TWS, but let's face it, F1 is an elitist sport for the uber-wealthy. Based on Austin's appetite for Lambos, Ferraris, Gulfstreams and $5M homes, I'd say the chances of success are far greater today than a speedway on the prairie was in 1975.
Just my 2 cents....

I agree with you EL. My point is there is always talk around here about building race tracks. Different years different things. Drag, circle track, road race. There was also the rumor Sandra Bullock bought Longhorn Speedway by the airport for Jessie James to play with. Nada. Outside of a private short road race track nothing has been built. I would love to see it happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Now the not-so-good news. I sure hope it's a better design then his last few boring tracks.

Tilke To Design New Austin Circuit
By Jonathan Noble
Thursday, May 27th 2010, 07:55 GMT
The new Austin Formula 1 track, which will host the American Grand Prix from 2012, is to be designed by Hermann Tilke, race organisers have announced.
Shortly after revealing its 10-year deal to hold the US event, Austin race promoters Full Throttle Productions have now earmarked a site for the circuit and confirmed that Tilke will be involved.
The exact location of the venue has not been disclosed, but Tavo Hellmund, managing partner of Full Throttle Productions, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press that its was 'more than 700 acres.'
Hellmund also ended speculation about who would design the track by confirming that F1 regular Tilke, the man behind track designs at Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Shanghai, and Sepang, will be involved.
Race promoters said the track would be "one of the finest permanent road course facilities in the world. Fans should expect the craftsmanship Tilke is famous for, with a priority placed on green building and a track similar to the great grand prix tracks of previous generations."

Well the clockis ticking for the 2012 race. They better break ground soon or they will never make the 2012 race deadline. Knowing how the tree huggers here work, they will try and save the cockroach from being moved.

I've meet with developers that are claiming that they are building a new airport, Movie Studios and the F1 Track in Bastrop Co. It would be awsome! Good Luck!

Anywhere far away from I-35 is fine with me. Though I'd hope they'd take advantage of the elevation changes that are west of the city.
