Beautiful Day gone crappy.
Wheel not too much damage. Looks like a new knock adapter and some touch up paint on the road rash. Luckily the ground was very soft and the tire stayed on until I hit the shoulder.
The safety wire was still on the spinner. Nice and tight.

Gosh Gregg, that's awful! I'm glad (and amazed) the damage was minimal.
What exactly broke? I'm a little confused by the pictures, never having installed a pin-drive adapter.

Jim,
It looks like the studs holding the knock off adapter sheared off. I Plan on checking the three other wheels tomorrow morning.

I see four intact studs on the hub (3rd photo). Were the pin/bolts torqued properly?

Show us what you find when you take the adapter off the wheel. I think there's more to see in this puzzle.

Sorry to see this, Gregg. But I guess it is better now than at Harris Hill in March. Let us know what you find.

Once I get back from TDY I will let every one know what I find out. The bolts where torqued to the required specks. That is what I dont understand. I am sure the answer is right in front of me just havent had the time yet to take it apart and examin the parts.

Very true. As long as no one was hurt, you had a very good day.

Schidt, Greg! Glad for the minimal damage and you gtg.
The answer is contained within the space between the adapter and the rim .. it's as if there was one pin installed on a lug and it broke because there were no pins installed on the other lugs. Or perhaps the pins were the wrong thread and pulled out. Pretty freaky

I'd thought about tack welding my adaptors on, that's convinced me!
I bet it was a PITA to get the car on the recovery truck Gregg?

I emailed the HCC list, but see this thread:
Pin drive bolts splitting Help Please
Mine were cracking and so I had David make me a set. Expensive, but correct and working properly 3500 miles later.

Can someone tell me what I am looking at? The pictures just don't make sense me. If we ignore the pins for a moment, I thought there were just 3 main pieces. The adapter, the wheel and the spinner. How can the adapter remain on the hub, while the spinner is somehow still on the wheel? Is this adapter 2 pieces or something or did the the threads on the adapter strip allowing the wheel with the spinner to depart the car or did the adapter itself shear?

I couldn't really figure that out either; my Hurricane doesn't look like this but I am using Vintage drives. It looks like the pin drive adapter separated from the hub, having sheared the wheel studs. The thread I posted above addresses cracking pin drive nuts, which may be a contributor.

Only one stud was sheared off. Something is very odd with the pictures. I can't understand how only one stud would shear of unless the he forgot to use the drive pins or some other "operator error" contributed to the problem. I have Vintage Wheels on mine and have never had a problem. Their design is about as simple and foolproof as possible.

Gregg emailed the hi-res pics to our HCC mailing list. After looking closely at them, it looks pretty obvious that the pin nuts came lose and let go of the studs. The one that sheared was the last soldier hanging on. I suspect when Gregg separates the wheel from the adapter he'll find that the 4 pin nuts came lose and then #5 snapped under weight/stress. Also, his studs look like they have been cut off, and don't look nearly long enough to pass through the adapter and securely into the pin nuts.

Recurring maintenance item?
Is torquing down the pin nuts considered to be a recurring maintenance item?

Hell I though torquing down EVERYTHING on these cars is a recurring mtc item.
Seriously I don't know, but I sure sleep better if I pull the wheels and take a peek around every 5-600 miles. But the new Kirkham nuts are excellent and mine have not moved in 2k miles. I used a small amount of blue Loctite just to help them behave.

Sorry all I haven't been able to really read the other posts. My plan is to contact vintage wheels and talk it over with them. I am going to send them some better quality pictures. I am going to let them exam everything. Then get the wheels fixed and back on the road.
This working off a blackberry sucks.
