Need Assistance with Cobra purchase - Newbee here
Hello, I am new to the forum and looking for assistance in the purchase of my 1st Cobra. I am by no means a mechanical person but have been looking for a year now. Any thing that doesn't seem right then please let me know.
Here is what I have been told about the car:
1998 Lonestar
'69 351 windsor bored 30 over 500 miles on it since the rebuild
650 Holley
560 lift cam
202 heads
disc brakes 355 rear
rack and pinion
paint is good
I do know the speedometer cable isn't hooked up. He told me the plug is straight but this setup requires a 90 degree angle in order to plug it in. I think for $19k the price seems good for my first cobra.

The price is good you could part the car out and probably make money check the LoneStar website and see what you get for $20,000 in a basic kit and you will see.

So you are saying it's possibly a good deal and the price is good. Any known problems with the '98 Lonestar?

There are no problems with a 98 Lonestar. There have been changes to the car since then but it is still a very solid and reliable cobra. If you buy the car, you may ultimately want to change the Alden shocks to the QA1's and upgrade to the adjustable upper control arms. Easy upgrades.
$19k sounds like a super deal assuming the motor, drivetrain are in good condition. Have a mechanic check it out for you.

You couldent build that car for the $19k hes asking.......
buy it. drive it for a season and then change what you dont
like about it or sell it for the $19k you paid for it...

John Ross has one of the early Lone Stars, #89 in the series.
It has only gotten better with age.

That's a steal if the drive-train is in good condition. Even if you had to rebuild the engine, trans and rear end you would still be easily valued around 30k. There are a couple Lone Stars around here and (my 2-cents) I've often thought they looked like a real decent car compared to some others.

Ok, I am ordering the inspection and appraisal to make sure everything is good. Hopefully this one will work out. Does anyone know how to find a speed cable that has a 90 degree bend at the plug in?

Please inform us of the tranny type (brand and model) and any under-car clearance problems with the clutch throwout fork.
Have you thought of sending a Lonestar owner over to check out the car? Nothing escapes someone who has built one.

I thought about that but the car is about 2 1/2 hours from me. Once I get things more nailed down then I might call on your expert opinions to help look at the build When I find out the trany type I will let everyone know but I am not sure what a clutch throwout fork is??

So at this point it's a 4 speed top loader but don't know the year or type yet. He said its from a much older car and is getting the number from the tranny later. He is sending me the series # also.

If it checks out and looks good you might want to pick it up before someone else comes along and does. From what Brian told me really the only things that changed are the door hangers, shocks, and updated the suspension some.

Does anyone think the speed cable is an issue. Would there be a serious reason that would require a 90 degree cable? Also does anyone have a pic of what I am looking at for the clutch throwout fork?

Most all of the Cobra's speedo guages have a 90 degree adapter because of the supports and room behind the guage in the dash. I had to put one on every Cobra I have had. Cobra Restorers in Kennesaw, Ga sells them.
Part number: F-407010 Adapter flexshaft-right angle $ 99.95 plus shipping.
If you have any questions about Lone Stars contact John Ross as suggested above as he is an expert and he has an awesome car...

Is it difficult to connect the cable? Do you take off the dash or remove anything mechanical? Just trying to understand it since I am not a mechanical person and would need my mechanic to do it.

With any luck at all your mechanic should be able to lay on his back move his right arm this way then that way dislocate his left shoulder and bring his left hand up and under the dash then turn his head as seen in the exorcists to see behind the dash..yea shouldn't be a problem at all
