Default Hallett Report

(This event was 6/2 - 6/3 vs the title in the OP) Big turnout at Hallett last weekend, lots of the old Run N Gun crowd showed up and some hot factory cars: Porsche, Corvette, Lotus. We had a Lotus 7 Stalker and an Ariel Atom that was faster than stink! Cobras from St. Louis, Oklahoma, and Texas, and retired race cars from Indy and Formula 1. Lots to gawk at.

I had some really good times now that I have gone to the custom ERA IRS with outboard brakes and Hoosier R6's. Knocked 3 sec of my last trip to Hallett and ran a 1:27.3 best and regularly in the 1:28's. On a sad note, I broke a rod Sunday am and punched a hole in the water jacket, taking out the bearings in the bottom end Krap!

Clois announced that the Run N Gun event will restart this year at Hallett on 10/19 - 10/21. So start thinking about that and watch for more details from Clois.

Gotta go pull the engine and get it back to Keith for autopsy ...

Sam

You have any in car video Sam? I tried to keep up, but can't and want to see how our lines are different. I'm guessing I'm giving up some time with my 4 link, but didn't think it would be 5 seconds worth. You are humpin' around the track with ease, just can't figure out why the nut behind this wheel is so much looser than you

Tim, no video this trip. I wanted to minimize pit workload while I characterized all the changes to the car. I will theorize that the ERA IRS saved me some seconds over the heavy Jag rig I had before. It is very compliant.

I went for a ride with Sammy. He was turning 1:29s (2+ seconds faster than my car) with my heft in passenger seat. I now know how's he cheating. For one thing he only makes a couple of shifts around the track, very smoothly too. His car does stick like glue too. Not sure if thats the new rear end or the new Hoosiers. It felt phenominal in the turns, way faster than me. I think his biggest advantage are his big brass blls!!!

Sammy,

What is that the pot calling the kettle black. What is this "faster than stink" business? You were smooth and faster than STINK! I need more track time and bigger B___S to keep up with you and David.

Sorry about the rod, hopefully everything can be fixed quickly and easily. New Website ( Run N Gun thanks to Mark Earls) should be up and running in no time with some valuable information.

Clois

Default Time for getting serious Sam

SSSammy Looks like Clois pulled another great event out. I see alot of sun. Sorry for the lost of your friend. Hope Keith can make it all better soon. Sam not to be the bad guy BUT, it's time for drysump. You have upgraded that car to bullet fast. Better tires, rearend, and driver. Will weight to see the pictures but, I think you are pulling too high a "G" in these turns and are loosing oil pressure. Remember that what you see on the gauge is not what is getting to the #4 & #* rods and main bearings. Depending on the block you also might want to ask Keith about adding a oil support to the back of the block from the front supply channel if the block is a top or center oiler block. If you windowed the block it can be fixed. It's done racing. Having a backup bullet is a plus. Gald you and the car are OK and no Oil fires. small side note, if a bearing or bearings are burnt in the bottom end, up the oil pressure to #80 with an HVHP oil pump if you don't go drysump. Rick L.

Hi Rick! Yes, I have a meeting with Keith tomorrow to discuss how to make this motor more robust. I may go dry sump, will discuss with him. Also looking at cheaper fixes as you suggest. It IS a side-oiler block, but we are looking at the second weld job, as you know. I'm guessing a short block will be required

ERA 745 is all in pieces right now. Got the motor on a stand ready to drive it up to Arkansas tomorrow. Sure miss you at these events! You ought to fly down and hang out with us at Run N Gun in Oct

SSSammy,

I too lost a FE last weekend (Sat afternoon @ Hallett), it came apart between 6 & 7. I haven't had time to look at it yet, as my son went into the hospital Monday afternoon. He's better now, but I'm still not messing with the car yet, he's higher priority.

I do know that the #3 main cap was laying on the track; one of the cleanup crew brought it to me.

Would you mind posting what you find, so that I can compare when I get around to pulling mine out? Or PM'ing me? I would really appreciate it. From the pieces that were found, I'm sure I'm out for a new block and rotating assemby, just hoping that the heads, dizzy, etc are OK.

Best wishes,
Joe

Sammy,

I hate hearing about your engine damage. Can't help but wonder why it chose to give up when it did, considering similar punishment many times before. You think new rear end = more Gs = oil pushed out too far? Anyway good luck on getting it back together ASAP.

Thanks, John! I will get a call from Keith Mon or Tues with the diagnosis. Ross and I are thinking it went like this: I had been getting white smoke out of the right side pipe. I was thinking a bad ring, #4 plug was fouled, engine was backfiring. What I forgot: white smoke is not oil, white smoke is coolant. Oil smoke is bluish. Anyway, new plug and backfiring is cured.

Next session, head gasket leaks more coolant into #4, coolant degrades cylinder wall lube at max rpms, eventually causing #4 piston to seize, breaking the rod, punching a hole in the water jacket, taking out all the bearings in the bottom end. When I came off the track there were 2 holes in the pan, and coolant/oil mix dripping. There had also been a fountain of coolant/oil mix spraying out of the dipstick tube ... As you know, this is the first symptom of coolant invading the oil side under high pressure.

So if this is the scenario, it's not really an oiling problem initially. We'll know soon.

Sam

P.S. I found out I'm a sixth generation Texan too! And here I thought I was just an undocumented Okie immigrant

Yes, KCR called yesterday. Block is split. Everything in it is scrap, so we are replacing with a new Pond block, 4340 steel crank, H beam rods, custom oil pump, AVIAD pan. $$$ No detail yet on why it split. Still need the builder to call me with his evaluation. Will be a month, probably. Just rolled the car onto the lift and raised it up so I can park the C6 under it. Much cleanup to do in the meantime and misc repairs.
