Lone Star tire question

I'm posting here because I think there are more Lone Star Cobras in Tx.

My question is "what is the largest tire you can get under your LS with a 8.8 rear end".
Now, I'm running a 26" (255/50-16") tire but would like to buy a pair of BFG drag radials and a pair of 15" x 10" rims. The 325s are 28" in diameter. I'm willing to narrow my rear end 2" to 2 1/2" to make the 10" rims with 325s work.

But before I spend a bunch of money I would like to see if anyone is running 325s. I concerned the tire will be to tall. I think I have front and rear wheel well clearance but maybe not the height.

I can buy 275/50-15 and they will fit but I afraid they may not fill out the 10" rims. 295 would work but I can not find a good 295 tire.

Anyone with some answers? Suggestion?

Dwight, you might want to ask in the Lone Star forums as well.

Just a thought.

I, and many other Lone Stars are running 315's in the rear. I suppose it depends on the length of your rear axle and the offset of your wheels, but going to 325's will only add 10mm, which is about 0.4 inches. I doubt that would be a problem...

My car currently has 315/5016 on the rear now, which are pretty tall. I will be changing wheels and tires to 315/35/17 soon.

I have run 335x17 in the past, have 315x17 now. My next tires will be either 305 or 295 in width, as the neither the 335s or 315s really fit, they both rubbed. Depends on your definition of 'fit'

I'm running the 315/35/17s on mine (ET Street drag radials) with Vintage Wheel's 10.5 x 17 knock-off wheels. I had to have the wheels made with a custom offset to get them to fit well though. They fit the car perfectly (outside of the tire even with the outside wheelwell lip). I am running a 9" on mine though... The car was built in 2000.

Dave and Rick
what rear end do you have under your car?

how much clearance from the tire to the fender?

Most that I have looked at are 1' to 2".

thanks Dwight

Dwight,

It is a 9 inch. There are a lot of variables here, such a wheel back spacing, ride height, tire pressures, axle placement fore/aft, it goes on. My 315/35/17 on 11 inch rims (don't remember the back spacing) line up very nicely with the fenders, look great, but with very aggressive driving and low-medium tire pressures the tires will rub.

When I had the 335s the axle had to be moved back slightly, the center of the wheel didn't line up with the center of the fender quite right. I've seen quite a few LSCs with this setup. It gets you a really wide tire but looks a bit odd.

As far as fender clearance, it depends; at rest, going over a bump, carving the perfect apex.....

9" for me also and I'd echo Dave's thoughts too.

Lone Star Tire Question

I have the ford 9" rear end. I don't remember the exact width of it, but it has been shortened. I recently put the QA2 adjustable shocks on my car with a front sway bar. These improvements have pretty much eliminated any fender rub (Except at 100+ mph on bumpy tracks).

Dwight:

I'm running a Kumho Ecsta XS 315/35-17 (28psi) with a 17x10 rim and 5.5" backspace on my Lonestar. Currie 9" from Brian with QA-1 adjustables.
I have a very slight rub on the left rear inside, but ONLY at the track - hard in a corner. Street driving no problems. 11,500 miles.

Dwight

I have BF Goodrich TA Radials on the car now, but I plan to swap to 17" wheels and the Khumo Ecsta tires.

I think the wheels are 16x10 rear and 16x8 front. I didn't buy them originally.

Rick
