Default New Look!

After making my wheels look vintage thought I'd go the rest of the way!

jwoodard, 601HP, j_b and 3 others like this.

Yea I'm really happy the way it turned out. I always liked the vintage race look but wasn't sure how it would turn out without stripes. Once I did the wheels it just begged for the rest.

numbers are great... not a fan of the mfg stickers, though.

The car look exquisite... liken to CSX3049... nice job.

Congratulations Gary; you've made your already fabulous car look even better! I'm also interested to know what you did to the wheels.

Gary - First of all, let me just say that I have always really admired your car and now with the vintage look you just did, it is absolutely incredible. In fact, your car looks so nice that after struggling for the last 6 months as to what color to paint my car, I may have just changed my mind again.

Ever since watching the Gumball Rally as a kid, I knew that someday I would have Guardsman Blue Cobra. I bought a Contemporary a few years ago and it was already painted red. I worked with Mickmate and we did the black sidepipes, rollbar, quickjacks, etc. and I really liked the look - CSX3020 is one of my favorites.

I just bought a Hi-Tech in primer and can paint it any color that I want and decided to stick with red. That is until this morning when I saw your car...

Now I have to go back and re-think everything

The first picture is my old Contemporary and the second attachment is what I will use to make my final decision.

Once again, great job.

Car weighs 2,000 lbs as it is carbon fiber with all aluminum 496 FE. As far how I did the wheels. John I used your approach with paint as I really liked the wheels on your Kirkham but wasn't sure how that would work, so a friend of mine had a bent Cobra wheel and I started experimenting on it with primer and paint. Sanded the wheels with 220 and then I started with a light green etching primer, added some gray primer and then flat black paint. The key to the look is with the green still tacky then dusting the gray and flat black and start rubbing with black mechanic's gloves on to get the vintage look. Even the spokes looked really old. Sometime the paint would smudge or get rough which made it look even better. I took me about 3-4 hours per wheel but was worth it as I really wanted an old magnesium look and they came out just as I wanted.

Gary,

They look really, really good. Right off 3049..especially with the Guardsman Blue and the GY's.

Nicely done...the car looks spectacular in the pics...

Thanks John. Talked to George Thompson yesterday and he really liked it also. He told me he just order some new wheels and Billboards from Vintage Wheels for his 427 Comp Car, so he could take off the magnesium wheels and old tires. He said Vintage will now make them look like his old magnesium wheels so be interested in seeing how those look compared to his wheel below.

Gary

I think that your car looked great with the work that you did on the wheels.
Then I saw the pictures of the stickers on the car, now it looks incredible.

I wanted to replace the original Halibrand magnesium wheels so that they wouldn't explode or disintegrate or whatever and the tires are around 25 years old
So I called Vintage Wheels and they are going to paint the center a light gold and then bead blast the aluminum rim
They said it would be a pretty close match to the original wheels

After hearing how many hours you spent on your wheels, I figured it was worth the extra $100 for the antique look. Lol

I'll send a picture of the new wheels when I get them. It should be sometime this week

Interesting, I just talked to Bob Lacey at Vintage Wheel a few weeks ago myself, about making the same wheels. I wanted to replicate the light gold centers of the original cars like George's, Dick Smith's, etc. He mentioned they are doing a batch of 3-4 sets of the light gold wheels. can't wait to get mine!
