Vettes are nice but nothing gets attention like a GT40 out in the public.

Have you seen the z06, I want that attention, YES PLEASE, I love all cars and that new Vette is Bad Bad Bad A S S....I would say cobra for weekend cruises, Daytona coupe for racing and long trips, gt40 for racing and long trips, it has a luggage compartment, lol, the Vette just does it all well, as any modern car...

All good points. But, here's the bottom line. Which one grabs your eyes more? Which one makes you suck in your breath and smile every time you look at it? Which one will call to you from the garage, "Lets go for a drive!" Which one gives you a woody? Buy that one.

There some hardtops available for cobras. I have seen a SPF with one and I believe that some others offer that option as well. I have a soft top on mine and they work quite well. You can store it in the boot and take it along just in case. The hard tops are hard to take a long ust in case...

My 997TT is the "Z06" of the current stable. I'm leaning toward Daytona Coupe. I drove a Shell Valley Cobra yesterday and was NOT impressed. Wonder if the Backdraft feels better? Anyhow I also drove a nicely sorted FF Daytona Coupe and it's the current t preference - at least unless I drive a better Cobra.
What do you think it would cost to add A/C? Also, what do you think the price difference should be between 351 vs 402 Roush engine assuming both cars well sorted otherwise?

AC probably 3g, it really does not matter what car you buy, they are all built to different grades, a Factory 5 might be put together by a GOD while an SPF even though is a factory roller the one doing the engine and trans install could have been a complete moron, so the quality of the build is huge, not the make...

$3k for AC. WOW. Didn't think that much. And I agree on the importance of the build job.

A/C is expensive to add to these cars because they really don't have a lot of space and it's mostly labor to make it all work cleanly.
Of your options the roadster with a really nice hard top is likely the best all around option and also fits your price target (new or used). As for the price differences among makes, unless you experience them all in person both driving and appearance there's no easy way to gauge the differences. All I can say to that is they all seem to sell quite well to a long list of happy owners...
I'm trying to include some pictures of the new "Fastback" roof from Backdraft. It comes with different side options such as a scoop, a window, or blank.

EVOKING
I had a Cobra for 15 years.
I have rode in and drove a friend's Coupe a lot in the last 4 or 5 years.
I have a RCR GT40.
I would suggest you buy a Cobra for your first car.
Dwight

I drove this B&B to the 2015 London Cobra Show. A little over 1150 total with the top on.
Sunday I left the side curtains in for the 500 miles return trip home in 85 degree weather. It was nice inside.
This car is for sale

I started off wanting a Daytona and ended up with a Cobra. The primary reason for any project for me is to build the car with my kids. I went with the Cobra for two primary reasons: (1) off all the cars I looked at, 75% of the Daytona's looked like they were built at home, while most of the Cobra's looked pro, which led me to conclude it's much harder to get a Daytona build to look right. The last thing I want is to end up with a car that looks like I made it myself; and (2) The enclosed cars IMO are less comfortable and require AC and likely P/S. I didn't want the complexity. I also should add I live in NoCal, so if I leave on a given morning in the Cobra, 99.9% it won't rain if it's not in the forecast.

I have a friend with a Superformance GT40. It is fantastic. Extremely fast and stable. It steals the attention wherever it goes. But it isn't a first-timer car. You need to know how to fix things correctly - or you need to have a good mechanic.
For a first replica, do a Cobra. You will love it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I originally wanted a Cobra. But the Shell Valley car I drove spoiled it for me. I will try to sample a Backdraft.

A Backdraft cobra is a true drivers car, they built it for racing, and do race them, fast a s s cars that actually drive perfect...

Also find a Superformance and an ERA to drive before you buy. Forget about the advertising hype and get some actual seat time before you buy anything.

I have driven most of them, I had a SPF, I had a Backdraft, drove an ERA, the guy who built it was a moron, I love ERA just not his, I have a Kirkham, actually the best cobra I drove around a track was a JBL if you can call that wheelbase a cobra, the reason it drive nice, and was a top notch build, again if the build quality is their and quality parts they are all awesome, I like certain aspects of each I guess, in the end if you build it yourself make sure you know what you are doing...

Been looking at ERA GT40 and Superformance GT40's and Daytonas online. They look like real cars inside and out - hence the price. I see my budget scope creeping ;-)
Backdraft Cobras look great. Do they have all the mega cowl shake like over regular imperfections in road?
Regarding ERA GT40's it looks like they've stopped making them. Does that mean I want to stay clear due to lack of support?
