Holley tuning quirk...?

I was trying to help a friend get his carb running decently and I am having a hard time getting the idle down to a reasonable level.

It's a new Holley 670 Street Avenger w/vacuum secondaries.

I dropped the idle speed as low as it will go. The idle mixture to start with was set at about half a turn out on each side. The front float was a little high and the rear is still about half way up the glass but I wouldn't expect it to cause this problem....? What should I check next?

Set the float levels first. The float levels are one of the most important settings on a Holley affecting idle, midrange and high speed calibration. Set them where gas just barely wets the bottom threads of the sight glass. Then set the idle mixture screws. Put a vacuum gauge to read manifold vacuum and set the idle mixture screws for the highest vacuum reading. Then set idle speed. You also might have a vacuum leak, so look around for that too.

KountZ has it right I would be willing to bet it is ether a vacuum leak or the choke is stuck if it is a automatic chock it to has a fast Ideal screw. As well as a idle screw
1. Is the choke flap open strait up and down like yours ?
2. Get some soap and water in a bottle and spray around any gasket area and see if you have an ideal changes .
3.Be careful adj. the floats that the fuel does not spray every where and starts a fire .
4.You need to look at the butterflies to be sure they are opening and closing inside the carb .
5.You should be able to get the carb to idle down before you set the floats and adjust the fuel/air mixing screws .
