Spinout
Three comp cars were rented to MGM for that movie.
The coil-spring prototype, CSX3002, I believe was used in background shots.
CSX3011 and 3012 were the main cars; 3011 was painted white with the red meatballs and used as the car Elvis drove. Both were damaged during the filming, with 3012 being wrecked so badly, it was sold off after the remains were returned. Interesting thing is that 3012 was already sold to a customer on deposit when it was rented to the studio; the customer was given a different car in the end.
(this info is from the Registry)
As Steve (CS-EX-4027) always said, the movie provides a great time capsule with respect to original configurations of early Comp cars.
The best exaggerations of the movie is, first, in the opening scene, when the Cobra is forced off the road into a pond... and near the end, when the Ferrari is forced into the same pond.
In the water, the shot is of a ridiculous looking white car that bears little resemblance to the Cobra... and the shot of the "Ferrari" in the water is one of a TR-4 painted Ferrrari-red, painted even over the chrome.
Fun stuff...if you have never seen the movie, go rent it. The amazing vintage race cars will outweigh the goofy-Sixties musical.
