Default Electric water pump wiring????

Where do you hook up the wires for an electric water pump? Do you want the ability to turn the pump on when the motor isn't on?

Mike,

I would use a 30 amp relay (depending on the current draw of the pump motor) and wire it to the ignition switch. This would work most of the time. If you had a low battery, it could make starting the car difficult, though.

You might want to wire it through a separate switch. You could turn this on after the engine was started, but it is very important that you not forget.

You know, I would go to the electronics store and buy a time delay relay. I would wire it to the ignition switch so that it would come on one minute after the engine is started. This would give a cold engine a minute to generate some heat and start recharging the battery. A hot engine could run for a minute without a problem, too. The nice thing about this solution is that you don't have to think about it, it just works.

If you need help wirng this circuit, let me know. It would help to know the current requirements of your pump. (Amps or Watts)

Paul

Mike,

I just wired mine to the ignition. I figured if I ever needed a jump there would probably be a line of people offering to help!

I can't wait to get to the dyno with my current setup just to see what all these little effeciency things have done to rwhp.

If you use a relay it would be wise to wire in an light indicating that the circuit had closed and providing power to the pump. If the relay fails, light does not go on giving you a heads up.

Just a thought

Default ck this out

Best way is to use a continuous solenoid, a separate toggle switch, and a temperature control sensor just in case its left on it could also be dialed in at a certain temp could draw you a Diagram for a small Fee of course
Do not wire this direct to your Ignition switch !!!!!!!!!

Just to be clear on this, my RELAY is wired directly to my ignition.

Post Ed 2

I did not doubt you Ed 2 I figured you had it under control .
With the solenoid I have run up to 3 electric Fans at 1 time it works very well , as your relay, but I would not run more than 1 component off that relay as you are doing .

Mike,

Put a relay on it ,30a and wire it to trigger off the stater terminal of the alternator. The stater terminal will always be hot when the alternater is charging. When the engine is off the waterpump will be off it, will not run even if the ignition is on. Your amp gauge will indicate if you have a problem, no need for a light. makes a very simple and clean installation.

Hey Bob,

That's a beautiful solution! In fact, I may think of ways to use that for other heavy load devices.

Thank you,
Paul

MIKE - --

JUST A THOUGHT - - FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD EVERY COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEM THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE.

1. THE RELAY AMPERAGE RATING SHOULD BE AT LEAST 50% GREATER THAN THE MAXIMUM CURRENT DRAW OF YOUR PUMP. (ENGINEERING SPECS). I PREFER THE RATING OF THE RELAY TO BE "DOUBLE" THE MAX CURRENT DRAW OF THE PUMP MOTOR. (BLACKJACKS ENGINEERING MANUAL).

2. IF YOU'RE GOING TO USE A "TIMER" CIRCUIT I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU WIRE IT TO "KEEP THE PUMP RUNNING" FOR 2 OR 3 MINUTES AFTER THE ENGINE IS SHUT OFF. ONE OF THE BIG ADVANTAGES TO AN ELECTRIC WATER PUMP IS THE ABILITY TO DO THIS. THIS IS MUCH BETTER ON YOUR ENGINE BECAUSE IT PREVENTS IT FROM "COOKING" WHEN IT IS SHUT DOWN AND THE MECHANICAL PUMP IS NOT OPERATING.

3. REMEMBER: THE MORE "STUFF" YOU INSTALL THE MORE STUFF THERE IS TO BREAK OR TO OTHERWISE GET MESSED UP.

Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY,

BLACKJACK
