"Run" stand for my side-oiler

Ahhhh....the motor is back home

I'm thinking about building a "run" stand for it. Anybody done this? I know what I need for the electric, cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems. But what material should I use and how should I build it??

Should I put it on casters? What material for the exhaust hoses at the headers and how do I keep it from choking the engine?

Charmer,

I built this stand to run mine. I got a used radiator with fan and picked up the hoses from a local automotive place.

The headers and pipes are the ones for my car - I just ordered them ahead of time. At first I just ran with headers but the noise and the fact that I DO have neighbors called for the sidepipes.

The frame I actually purchased from Northern Tools for about $40 - it saved me from welding it all up. I added some channel for the radiator support, a used lawnmower gas tank, bought my MSD ignition, a used battery, and voila. Total cost was about $200 but the peace of mind that everything works is "priceless" as the commercial goes. I used my car dollies under the base, but those were hard to keep seated and the rubber caster wheels I had were too weak. I have the whole thing on a platform of wood with steel caster wheels screwed to the wood right now and that works great for moving it around. Don't worry about it tipping or anything: as long as there is nothing hooked to the flywheel, there's no torque to try to tip it.

I mounted the starter to the bottom of the frame with a plate. I just eyeballed the location and made slots in the plate to be able to mesh it with the flywheel. Don't make my mistake and mount the starter to the back - it happens to rotate the engine the wrong way....

That's perfect zipzip!!

That's just what I want to do too. Just to make sure the motor works. I was wondering about the starter! So you bolted a piece of plate steel to the wood platform and then bolted the starter to the plate steel? Sounds like it would work fine. Thanks so much for the info. If you got any more pics of your handiwork with the plate steel, I'd love to see them.

Can't wait to see the "Rocket's Red Glare"! I'll be at the hotel early on Friday to welcome everyone and get things set up. Look forward to spending some time catching up with you and Pam. Oh yeah, the "suprise"!? Well, whatever you have done to the rocket, I'm sure it's very cool.....but what could it be???
