Our '68 Mustang Fastback project: new pics

(thanks for indulging my non-cobra content post, but I thought you guys might like to see the progress, albeit slow...)

Have I gone and lost my mind?!?

Since my son Nick is well on his way to recovery, I've found time to get back on our restoration project. While everybody else in the country was enjoying the Mustang 40th Anniversary celebration in Nashville, I had more repair work done on the floorpans and firewall (toe boards) by Advantage Autoworks in Dallas. They did a great job, then Todd recommended that I go ahead and get the entire underside sandbasted and resealed for the complete restored look. After contemplating doing the whole thing with a grinder and wire brush vs. one afternoon at the sandblaster, I selected the latter. That was the RIGHT choice - it looks awesome! Next step, I found set of rotisserie stands that I could borrow indefinitely, brought them home and loaded them up -- WOW! I can spin the car completely around on its centerline, which really helped when it came time to empty out all that excess sand.

I'm now working on smoothing out the weld seams where the floorplans were replaced and applying a fresh coat of red oxide primer/sealer.

It even fits in the garage! (barely..)

Oh Bob, this build of yours is what's bubbling in the back of my mind (don't tell my wife, she's just recovering now from the Cobra build!).

See, the way I figure it I either buy a new car for a daily driver or I build a resto-mod late '60's Mustang for my daily driver. I have a short list of must-haves:

- Rock solid reliability (would probably put a late model DOHC motor in it)

- A/C & Heat

- Decent stereo

- Good, solid performance suspension

- Lots of sound deadening material

That's about it. What are you planning for yours?

I'm 99% sure that mine is going back completely original (except where noted below)... This is a factory GT car, J-code (302 4bbl) - I have the Marti Report - so I want to restore it as original looking as possible. That would be:

302-4v, C4 auto, candyapple red exterior w/white "C" stripe, dark red standard interior, GT equipment group (fr disk brakes, GT wheels, larger anti-sway bar, fog lights,etc.), electric clock, power disk brakes, power steering, tilt-away steering column, tachometer and trip odometer.

Non-original additionals will be: A/C, shift kit for C4, upgraded radio (hidden CD changer, speakers), slightly lower fr/rear springs. It should look just like the following car when finished:
