Talking Heading to Philmont today... YIPPEE!!!

Well,
Sometimes I just can't stand myself, and I have REALLY been pre-occupied all morning...........because I am boarding a chartered bus at Circle 10 council of the Boy Scouts of America this afternoon with ten young men and one other adult leader head for northern New Mexico!!
We will spend the next 12 days on a high adventure wilderness backpacking trek hiking through the mountains in elevations ranging from a low of 6700 feet to a high of 12,300 feet at the tip of Mt. Phillips.
I AM PUMPED!!!! This is my last shot at this with my son, and I am looking forward to some new memories that we both will never forget!
Next year, Tulsa should be back in the picture! Hopefully, I will be back on line on the 22nd.
See y'all in a few weeks!
John Russell.......just another kid trapped in an old man's body

jrussell,

You will have a great time - even better because you will be sharing it with
your son. I went there eons ago when I was in the scouts and did the
wilderness trek plus a 2 week leadership course - you will get some great
hiking in - and some close encounters with the local bears unless they
got rid of them.

John, didn't you go to Philmont a couple of years ago?? I know you are so thrilled. My brother has great memories of it, and my oldest son had his first 'philmont meeting' just a couple of weeks ago. He leaves July '06 for his trek. Good luck, have fun, don't get too overloaded, and we'll see you when you get back.

Kristen
we'll miss you in Tulsa.

Good for you! I went with my son two years ago, and it was one of the most strenuous and rewarding things I have done in my life. The thing that's fun about going as an adult is that you don't have to do anything except keep them from killing themselves! The kids do all the cooking and cleanup--the adults are not supposed to. The only problem I had (besides being a slowpoke) was that I never acclimated to the elevation while we were above 8000'--four straight days. Be warned, by the last few days you will really be sick of the food! Have fun and be prepared for an overdose of adolescent language and humor.

P.S. If you get a chance, go on the tour of Philmont Lodge. It's very nice.
