They mentioned last night that phone bidders were paying a 12% buyers fee, compared to the 10% fee for people there at the auction. Yikes !
That said, there seemed to be some pretty good buys last night (Friday) and they were reporting about 2/3 of the way into the evening that the total sales dollars were down considerably from 2006 (they gave actual numbers which I don't recall).

I talked two a couple of sellers who had brought three or four cars last and this year. They both said that their sales were down 20-25 percent from last year. Small sample, I know, but kind of reflects what Yetiman heard on TV.

It seems like the numbers matching kind of cars are the one's selling low, and the type that a lot of folks would drive are selling for much more than in the past. More folks who are "drivers" at the auction this year than "collectors"???

If the new Shelby Mustang was worth over a half a million with a guitar the one of Cobra should have sold for more than 5 Million.

1958 Vette
Ed,
The guy who bought the 1958 Corvette is my law partner's Father-in-law. I just saw him last Sunday and he told me he was going out to BJ. I told him that they had nice cars but over priced in my opinion. He said he was not going to buy anything, just look. Famous last words.

Do not forget that the sell price minus the list price (about $450K) will be deducted from his Schedule C on 1040 as a charitable donation.

woops
I had to leave the TV and got that number off the B-J web page. So 5 mil even? Plus or minus the tax, title, dealer prep, and options etc.

Pratte is the largest framing contractor in the west, as I understand. He keeps his car collection private, no public viewing.

It only went for a cool $5.5 million. Not bad for a car that wasn't in original condition.

Highest price ever paid for a car.....
I think a few people thought that Lot #1301 could possibly break the record
for the most ever paid for a car. A Bugatti Type 41 (chassis #41111) sold for
$17 million in June '06. At $5 million, #1301 didn't come close. A BJ record, but
not a world record.

But, depending upon his tax bracket, he may not be able to claim the full charitable amount, as the more you make, the less, i.e., lower percentage of the full amount can be written off on schedule C. i.e. Screw job again.
