Default Front License Plate

In a conversation with the DPS Hurst TX office, I was informed that tickets will be issued for cars for not having a front license plate, period. I stated that my car is patterned after a model which, at that year, did not have a front license plate mount. The officer told me to simply put the front license plate visible behind the windshield when it is on the street, and remove the license plate from behind the windshield upon arriving at the destination, as for car shows.

Does anyone know of a license plate holder that clips to the top inside edge of the windscreen or soft non-scratch holder to place it between the rearview mirror and the glass?

I don't know about mounting that way but, Finishline has a bracket that mounts to the two bars that hold the bumpers/quick jacks.

If I was in your predicament, I'd just make one out of plexiglass sheet and some suction cups that you can buy as replacements for radar detector brackets. Shouldn't be that hard to cut out and assemble.

Another option (and lighter) would be to surround the sharp edges of the license plate with some foam rubber (something like a door edge guard, but softer). Glue the foam/protective edge to the license plate, then simply use the bolt holes in the plate to mount four of the suction cups. I doubt it would go anywhere, and if it did, the foam rubber would minimize/eliminate any gouges to the dash work. The foam rubber would also act as an insulating barrier and keep wind from seeping around the wind screen and lifting the plate away from it.

Good luck!

If you are running with a "nudge bar" ( front oval bumber set up), the street 427's had one that was hinged and at about 10 MPH it folded into the nose. As you stopped a spring returned to to the upright position. Made for some smiles when you got stopped "in the day" by the man.

The only legal way to not have a front plate is if your car is titled as being a 1945 or 1946 and you are using original plates from back then. The only reason those 2 years get around it is because TX didn't make front plates for those 2 years.

I'd go with the suction cup method that was already mentioned.

The Finishline store in Fl has a very nice front plate bracket. The site is to the left of this post.

It is SS and well made.

Yes in Texas we are required to have a front plate. With that said I have not had on the front of my car for almost 5 years and not had any issues. It will be luck of the draw on the officer that stops you if they wish to make an issue of it.

Best of luck in your decision.

James

James-W, same here. If I do get stopped, it depends on how you and the officer gel. I'm sure if your nice about it, he'll let you go. If not, pay the fiddler and get on with it. Their too busy now deciding on the current license plate frames covering up any of the Texas plate!!
Some dealers in Houston/Dallas are fighting this in Austin.

Good news on this front. They just changed the law on this, again.

The frame now can not cover more than half of "TEXAS" on the top of the plate.

I've gotten 9 warnings about the missing front plate here in New York
I always have it in the door pocket, though.

Fortunately, not from the same officer.

You are so silly.

Tag it in Oklahoma, Sleazy and easy.

My front plate is a bad curb crunch and half a dead squirrell.
