Tulsa
hey Guys and Gals.
Every year in Tulsa they have had a 'track tour' which is basically a great way for novices to run the track. With a pace car (controlled speed) and 'no passing.' I have run it every year and really have enjoyed it, as a newbie. Last year I did it, and said 'wow, this was too easy! next year moving 'up' to level '3'. Well this year they have ELIMINATED the track tour level, so anybody running at Hallett will have to start at level 3. Pre-Registration is 'closed' on June 1st, but you can register there. I have never pre-registered any year i went, but am this year, because i think with their eliminating the track tour there may be more folks signing up for track day.
So this is just a heads up. Go to the Website, download the forms, and mail it in if you think you might want to do Hallett level 3.
I have decided not to do the Dragstrip at all- you know, you win it once you might as well let someone else have a turn
But I am doing the Road Course at Hallett both Friday and Saturday.
I have decided Road Course is what Cobra's are all about. What a challenge!
Level 3 I BELIEVE has controlled speed (still a pace car, but a bit faster) and controlled passing (like on two straights) but I am not 100% about that. Also, helmet is required on level 3, but not on the old 'track tour'. So bring your helmet. I don't know if passengers are allowed on level 3.
All these things we will find out.
If anybody knows this information already, please jump in and post it. I haven't done 3 before, so just don't know!
Am looking forward to 'da b!tch' with several of you.
k

K,
Looks like you're hanging with me for two days. I'll be at Hallett Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Also, everyone needs to check the age of their harness. Mine expired before my TWS school, and they caught it during tech inspect.
And what's this "da b!tch" all about?

here you go! In Tulsa, June hmmm 14-17???
Father's Day weekend, which is a bummer. The Marriott I am SURE is booked, but the overflow hotel is the Tulsa Southern Hills- a Hyatt I believe.
Two track events.
Hallett- Road Course with excellent elevation changes, and 2 long and 1 short straightaways. Depending on level in which you are entered, you may 'pass' and not have controlled speed. I think level 3 is controlled speed and limited passing if any.
On Thursday evening, there is a Car Show on the main drag, and several blocks are barricaded off for a show of roughly 500+ cars. Maybe less. the Cobra's leave the hotel early, and arrive to park at the Sonic. Special treatment.
Friday after the track day at Hallett, is a visit time in the ballroom, with snacks served. Cash bar available. I think. Can't remember about Friday.
People mill around, and many vendors set up in the ballroom to hawk their wares. tshirts, magazines, engines..... (keith and Shelley were there last year)
Saturday. Back to Hallett, or you could chose to go to the dragstrip. About 20 minutes+- Northeast. Great strip, with grandstands. At the strip is a swap meet, giant yard sale, where you can find treasures and junk.
Saturday evening is a cocktail party (cash bar) and then banquet type dinner, that you must buy tickets for, and you attend with your friends.
or not. Usually Ford sends a rep to talk to us. The talk is pleasant, but usually an hour too long.
lots of door prizes given. typical banquet food, but some people skip it and go out to eat.
Sunday, Car Show in the parking lot of the Marriott, and adjacent office building. Free if you've registered. I've entered twice, and skipped last year. Usually about 10-15 Cobra's entered. CSX's are in a different category (old or new) than replica's.
After carshow, around 3 pm, they give out the awards for the carshow, and also for the dragstrip. Trophies, plaques, typical. Lots more door prizes!
Then by 4 or so start the 5+ hour drive back to Dallas! whew!!!
that's it, in a nutshell. I've been every year I've had the Cobra, and wouldn't miss it.
Nice combination of stuff.
Tons of track time (oh yes, Hallett is about 30 minutes west, northwest of Tulsa), and lots of party time.
The Dallas group hosts a parking lot party for those Oklahoma'n's that claim to be Texan's at heart.
I think that it's Friday night??
The Sonic Cruise on Thursday is great, the parking lot party on Friday is great, and the banquet dinner on Saturday night is great. (well not quite as great but nice) most of the Dallas group does go to the dinner.
Ford always has a nice video and show of the next big car to be introduced.
The GT, the Hertz, the 500, the.....
Come join us, and please look for me. I think I'm about the only girl there with a Cobra.
Oh. the only negative?? It is hotter than hell. I am not kidding. About had heatstroke last year after the dragstrip on Saturday.
humid. hot. humid. hot. hot hot hot and not the cool hot!!

In fact, my pitcrew is very knowledgeable and loyal.

Kristen,
Forgot about the pit crew there at home. Though you may need to have one more to have a full crew I think you are missing a 'Time Keeper'
Fuel, screen, wheels, stop/go..yes you need another pit crew person.
And sponsorship.. ..I forgot about David's joint cheque/check account..
Mmmm and just noticed all this is happening on Father's Day. Guess it will not be coffee and breakfast in bed at your place for poor old Dad..
Have fun mate. Now thats at the track.

K, just got what you were talking about,
Da B!tch is Hallett's Turn 10. A 180 degree U-turn, the last turn before the Start/Finish line. It's one of those turns you really have to brake first, ride it out, and not accelerate too early. It's the one on the lower left:
K, can you tell I've been studying a little?
I'm registered for the High Performance Driving School on Wednesday from 9-4. I'm heading up Tuesday night.
I'm planning on doing the drag event, but might change my mind about that. Not sure if I'm going to show on Sunday, I've heard all that track time gets a lot of crap on the car. Not sure if I want to bust my tail to get it in show condition after 4 days on the track.
Steve, did you have to get new harnesses after the tech inspection at College Station?

Miles,
You can read and listen to everyone until your out of your mind. You'll find that NOTHING can replace seat time. Just ask Jay, Larry or who ever has raced before.
I'm guessing we're driving counter-clockwise. For some reason, both (yes only two) times I've been on a track, it's been clockwise. But that turn ten reminds me of the last turn onto the straight-away down at TWS. I found whatever speed you go into it, maintain until your wheel unwinds. The car will track. But if you lift or accelerate, be prepared to watch your ass-end pass you by.
Ohhhhhh, KRISTEN!!!!!... is that what the ass-b!tch subject is all about????
Hey, John D! Any word on my transfer over to the Marriott???
Also, does anybody have a open seat for the cruise to Sonic? My daughter and a friend are coming to visit from Stillwater, and would like to join us.

Steve,
You are definitely booked at the Marriott....bad news is they were sold out of the event rate.....Larry R. and I tried to pull some strings (He knows a Marriott exec) to get a better deal, but I dont think we have succeeded at this point.

well not quite, Miles, but you get an "A" for effort. A "C" for accuracy.....
"The B!tch" is actually between 8 and 9, that pretty little uturn that also has some elevation change, and happens between a de-celeration and up to a major acceleration BEFORE the wicked turn 10 that takes you to the start finish line.....
Nice try. And that, my dear dear friend, is where I'm gonna whup your a$$.
hehehehe!!!
yup, Steve, yours too! and yes, it runs counterclockwise. Jay says add 3 minutes to your total elapsed time if you run it clockwise. All because of 'da b!tch.
be glad we're running it counterclockwise.
Steve. An empty seat to Sonic will be possible, but have to wait and see. We usually pull out of the Marriott parking lot by 5 or before, so have the girls over there early enough.
I LOVE doing the dragstrip, but just decided this year not to do it. No real particular reason why, other than i am fine tuning my driving opportunities to Road Courses. I think my (most) Cobra(s) is (are) setup for the Road course, and unless you've got a 'dragonsnake' most modern cars are gonna whup your a$$ at the strip. They are fun, tho' and the adrenaline really gets going.
I am going to miss somebody, though. Just too much maybe.
oh btw. there is a virtual track tour on the Hallett track link on the midamerica webpage. Go take a look....
Rearview mirror, Miles, rearview mirror
Bernie. My pit crew loves me. And I love them.
oh, and will you help be my crew in St.Louis??
My 'pitman' from last year has decided to BUILD his OWN Cobra so I'm SURE he won't be available to help me. He'll be driving instead of riding.
Kristen

Patrick, there is a link on the first page of this thread, to the Shelby meet. They have the hotels listed, but the Marriott is totally booked.
I would call the Hyatt, Southern Hills to see if you can get a room. There are a couple of other ones listed on the website as well.
I think calling direct is the best idea, as the plan of going thru the convention bureau is a joke.
I will see if i have the Hyatt phone number and post it in a bit.
Make sure your car is RIGHT, not just together for Tulsa. We want to play safe!!!
