Smile best "COBRA FUNS" story

Found this story on the ffcobra.com site by Kris Mangrum.

I came to the off ramp of I 840 in Tenn and have to turn left or right on highway 100. When I looked to the left(the direction I was headed) I saw that there where three state troopers under the interstate bridge and they had a road block going on. There were cars lined up going both ways. So I pulled in line and noticed that they were just checking drivers lisense's. I got mine out and waited my turn. One trooper was on the left, one on the right and one standing in the middle overseeing everything. As I got closer the trooper in the middle that haden't beeen doing anything nudged the other trooper and pointed to me (as to say I got this one). He walked over to me(at this time there were still cars in front of me) and the first thing he said was WHERE DID YOU GET THIS CAR! I told him that I built it and who the manufactor was and he just kept going on and on about how much he liked the car. He never asked for my lisense so I just handed it to him mid sentence. He glanced at it and asked me if everything was correct and I said yes and he said good enough and asked me about the motor. Not to long after this the cars in front of me we were gone. He looked up and then leaned over to me and under his big hat and dark sun glasses said "If you were to drop the hammer when you leave out of here I wouldn't say a thing"! I couldn't believe it! So I eased forward a couple of feet and popped the clutch in first and the car started to swap ends with me while I was going forward. I went probaly 25 to 30 ft with the back end of the car going back and forth and then hit second and took off. IT WAS SO AWESOME!!!! The state trooper in the left lane didn't know that I was going to do that so he spun sround so fast that his hat almost come off of his head and the last car that I passed in the other lane was looking at me with his mouth wide open. I'm sure they were thinking that I was running from the cops. I was shaking the whole way home with excitement. I called everyone that I thought would listen. This is by far the best thing that has ever happened to me in the cobra! To those still building.......HURRY UP! See what you are missing.

CR,

Very similar thing happened to me at last years 4th of July parade. We were carrying Marines in full dress uniforms as guests during the parade. Afterward I asked the young man if he wanted a REAL ride. We eased our way out of the crowd, crept to the blocked intersection while the Marine was removing his hat and strapping in. The cop at the intersection knew what we were doing. He gave me "the wink" while twirling both index fingers. I must have left 50' feet of rubber.

On the return, the cop had a smile as big as the Marine.

We're doing the same thing tomorrow morning for the parade. I'm wondering............

Oh Please stop. STOP, Stop. This is too much for us who have not experienced that...... and you did it just once.... I would have gone back and done it a couple of more times.

Well, how timely.
Just tonight I found myself trapped in the gridlock that was Addison's Kaboom Town. Thought I could cruise it without getting sucked in.
Under a watchful eye, the temps and pressures went to the top, but not overboard. I finally found a closed big-box retailer and scooted through the parking lot to a cross street where I could go way around the jammed traffic. Upon getting to said street, maintaining 45 mph and 2000rpm to cool the now vapor-locking monster down, my rear view mirror lit up like noon-time day. Dallas' finest.
They said they pulled me over because I was "hot rodding" through the parking lot, then traveling too fast in a 40. Correct on all accounts, sir. I asked if I could raise the hood because the car was really overheating and vapor-locking, no problemo. After running my DL, they returned with "Is this a real Shelby?" I explained it was a Superformance and showed them how they could tell the difference. They seemed interested so I let it go. They asked how fast I've ever had it, I explained, "around 151 showing off with my little brother and I've been to Hallett Raceway in Tulsa." Never connecting the two, mind you, but telling the story just that way. They commented it must be a thrill to have a car like that handle at 150 on the track, to which I answered, "sure must be."
They told me I had a beautiful car, to keep it in control and to have a good holiday. I bid them the same.
Note: My current registration and inspection is on stickers in the glove box. I have a replica 1965 sticker on the windshield and my wipers on in a box in the garage, my tires say "for racing use only. Not for highway use" and they never even blinked.
I'd like to thank them for that.
I was caught in a gridlock, shot through a parking lot to get to an alternate route and then went down said alternate to cool the motor. Fast with low rpm. Guilty as charged. High motor temps, high oil temps, only 27 psi of oil and vapor lock will get your attention too.
A well-noted note to self to do a better job of avoiding overcrowded known gridlock situations.
Have a safe and Happy 4th!

Cruising on the freeway, with the wife, one Friday evening after the sun went down. I was minding my own business when a yellow WRX pulled up next to me and wanted to race. As I looked at my wife he purged his nitrous system, she said for me to teach him a lesson about 427 power. Am I a lucky guy or what. As he took off hitting his nitrous I had to down shift to 3rd just so he could hear the sound as I went blowing past him. Caught him on the shift to 4th at about 5800rpm. The pipes were singing that sweet sound as I left him behind.
After I let off the gas and let him catch back up the driver and passenger both were bowing to the almighty COBRA. He killed his bottle and I hope he didn't hurt his engine

Cobra is back at the painter for final touch up, BUT, I do have a KVA GT40 also. Took the car to work yesterday and about 11 a.m. noticed a big storm brewing so decided to take it home and get it out of the weather. I only work 8 miles from home. As I headed home a mustang pulled up beside me as I left a red light and wanted to play, I ran it up thru 3rd pretty hard and turned to find the mustang and all I saw was a motorcycle cop flying toward me, Uh oh, as he pulls up besides me he wags his finger as in don't do that again and then gives me the biggest thumbs up and mouths I love that car and drives off. Needless to say it was the speed limit all the way home and deciding what to do with all that extra money I now have!!!! haha

Charles,

I have a lift in the garage for the 2 fun cars and I promise the one I want to drive that day will always be on top. Living in Texas I usually let the weather decide the car. 90 degrees and below is the cobra (it doesn't have a top or a/c) and above 90 is the 40 with top and a/c. Rain and it's the daily driver diesel pickup!
2nd part to your original thread is that I have several friends with the local sheriffs dept. and they drive faster off duty than I do. Dang professional courtesy thing works well for them. One has a 57 chevy and the other a vette! They will let me play alittle! Are you in El Paso or Tenn.

Larry

p.s. I am in the oil related business, hence 2 fun cars

I had some great fun when a local Prius snob was sitting next to me at the light enjoying my exhaust fumes. He called my Cobra an "Environmental Disaster" so I quickly relayed that it got 6 MPG and left him sitting there in a cloud of tire smoke.

Talking Watch out for Larry!

Hey Charles,

If Larry comes to ElPaso be sure to stock up on tequila. He's been known to have a few margarita's from time to time. Just ask him about his gas powered margarita machine.
Good thing your close to the border....

BTW I hope to meet up with you when you make it to Austin!

Tug, Tug, Tug...can you not just practice a little self restraint every now and again? Dear god, we sensible drivers of sensible cars despair about this kind of unruly and unnnecessary behavior!!!!
