Avon users

Considering a tire change in the spring. Avons were heavily discussed when they came on the scene but I'd like to hear from owners who have put miles on them and a season or two of use.

Like to know if they're as great after extended use as when new. All experiences including track data welcome.

Thanks,

I would be interested as well.

I have a set of Avons and GY Billboards for my car.

I have had the Avons for two years and love them. The grip and performance of the tires are awesome--I've been very pleased and wouldn't put anything else on my car (other than the Billboards when I want the old-school look that they provide).

The Avons are expensive, but IMHO a worthwhile investment for my car.

I have racked up over 15,000 miles on two sets of Avons, including 20 or so track days. GREAT tires. Expensive? There is nothing else you could do to your "Cobra" for $1500. that would come close to the performance increase you will get with a set of Avons.

Also do a search for Avons here on CC. Lot's of threads regarding them.

Here's one:

I want to get a set one of these days. Not too many choices for the 15" crowd.

Yes, but like your link from 2007 they're old news. Seen them all.

Stentor and 1061 are providing the long term use I'm asking about. Thanks to them and like to hear from others.

Read SPF1061's post here 1/27/08:

Not sure there's anything else to know. I'm sold when I need to replace my Yoko's. :)

I'm after a set myself in the spring. Did anyone ever firmly resolve the question of whether the Avons break loose with no warning? That was raised in several threads but I haven't seen a first-hand report one way or t'other.

Avon Tires

I replaced the Bluestreaks I previously used with the smaller Avons (225's and 275's). They performed great at the two track days I was able to get to this last summer (VIR and Monticello). The Bluestreaks are 10's and the Avons are at least 8's on the track but the Bluestreaks are 1's on the road and the Avons are 10's.
I highly recommend them.

Avon Track Performance

I did not experience any "snap spin" that has been previously discussed about radials but I did spin twice in the same place at Monticello. It was at the end of the long straight and caused by driver stupidity.
It took me a while to drive the right line. The Z06 driver behind me told me that he got a good reflection of the front of his car from my passanger side door!

I'm sure this has been beat to death somewhere in this forum but...In a nutshell, how do the Avons and Billboards compare on track and street? I have Yoko's and found them to be a bit loose on the track (note: I am very inexperienced on the track, but am planning on gaining more experience..it is just too damned much fun not to....).

dcdoug 12-09-2009 07:55 AM

Do the Avons throw stones as much as the Billboards do?

Sticky Tires and Stones

See the rear panel in the picture? Does that answer your question?http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...006_Small_.jpg

Until I clicked on the picture, I though you might be driving in the field and that was what was beating up your wheel wells....

I have only had my car since July and my wheel wells are starting to look similar with the Billboards. I am thinking about getting spats.

Gunner 12-09-2009 08:58 AM

Slight thread hijack, but has anyone tried the 3M shield along the rocker panels as well as over the front of the rear fender bulge?

Do a search for "spats" and you will find lots of comments on this and lots of other solutions. I was just doing this exact search myself.

I have the 3M shield on the front of my car and rear fenders. I've been pleased with how it has protected my car from chips.

Same here.

After 7K miles, my car still has a little road rash on the front where the 3m doesn't clear bra doesn't provide coverage. Keep meaning to do some touch up...or I'll just let the patina grow. :)

Thanks to the owners that gave Avon feedback. Would anyone comment on how well they hold air over periods of inactivity? And air gain/loss in track usage?

Although my G'years seem porous, many owners of those report no such problem. My Halibrands are not leaking as 4 sets of TD's held air very well.

Bobcat 12-09-2009 05:49 PM

ERA Chas .... I aired my Avons up several months ago and have only seen about a 1 psi change ... and thats probably from the temp changes . The car hasn`t been driven for the past 2 weeks ( rain ) and the pressure is still where I set it some months ago ... =/- 1 psi .

Bob
