Default Long Trip on Goodyear BB's?

Has anyone taken a long trip on their Goodyear Billboards?

This summer I'm going from the Seattle area to Lake Tahoe and then over to San Luis Obispo and up hwy1 and 101. I need new rear tires (imagine that ) and I'm concerned what would happen if I have a tire problem on the trip. I have a tire plug kit and a can of fix a flat, but I'm still concerned.

I have thought about a set of Avons, but I really prefer the look of the Goodyears.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I can't help you out with the tires (still on my 1st set of Yokos), but make sure you post something in the Bay Area Cobra Club forum when your trip gets closer. If the timing is right, maybe you can join us for a breakfast while you're in the area.

You will be close to Roger Krause Racing in the Bay Area (Castro Valley, I think). They sell lot's of BB's and know their stuff. If you have any problems or worries, stop in and talk to Roger or his Son Brandon. They are always interested in how tires are working out. Not only on the track, but on the road too.

I drove 900 miles on Billboards from Atlanta to DC and just brought a plug repair kit, pump and fix a flat. Didn't have any problems.

I have heard Goodyear BB's are not a legal tire for the public highway. It may not matter to you, but you never know about them CHP. I want to start a tradition with our Finest that they never give a Cobra driver a speeding ticket. I think it could catch on pretty quickly amoung the Club Cobra site.

Have BB's on SPF. went up coast from Orange County to Monterey/SF back in Nov., ~1000 miles cool weather (50-60's), damp/fog Carmel area, no problems. love the look of the tires/car in reflections from polished gasoline tankers. BB's have a bad rap as street tires.
Loose ~ 1# month air pressure

We took Jeffs car on a long ride on the BB's they are great tires once they're warmed up and the flatspots are out of them.

Technically BB are not DOT approved for a modern car because they are bias ply, but it depends on where you are registered and what year your car is registered as. If it is registered as a 1965, bias plys are legal.....

Tires aren't so much the problem with a Cobra in the rain. I asked my automotive legal advisor if the "NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE" should get scuffed off my tires and he said if anyones looking that closely at your tires it's just for tread depth.

I run 28 psi in front and 26 psi in back and check it weekly. Anything much below that and the tires "hunt" more than I like.

Wet traction for the GY Billboards is good. You might be thinking of or referring to Goodyear G-7s (which look similar to the Billboards).

I run 26 front and 22 back. I used to run 24 back but after a couple healthy 0-60 runs I noticed the outer edges were not getting any bite. So I backed it off a few psi and it launches better.

I personally wouldn't hesitate to ride these tires for long distances, wet or dry.

I have made many long distance trips with them with no problem.

I carry two cans of Fix a Flat -(I don't think one will fill a rear tire)

I specifically asked a CHP officer if they are legal and he stated that as long as the tread depth is legal the tires are legal.

There is no Federal specification that tires be radial or bias ply.

These tires should be replaced well before they get down to minimum tread depths.

carry a small 12 volt compressor with you and the fix a flat with the plug kit and you should be fine.........
and take lots of pics. to post of your trip, i havent seen or been in Lake Tahoe area for
5 or 6 years now. It's rather nice up there when the snow is gone for the summer.

To help reduce the hunting: 30 psi front, 28 rear.

I didn't have any problems with them in the wet. So long as you didn't stab at the go pedal stuck as good as any other tire.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm just going to go with some new rear tires and get a small air compressor.

I run 20-22 PSI in the front and 18-20 PSI in the rear. If you look on the Roger Kraus site, they recommend 20 PSI front and rear for racing. And generally racing carries a little more pressure so the side walls do not roll under during cornering.

In regard to DOT approval, bias ply tires can be DOT approved. The reason the Billboard are not is the side wall and tread carcass is very thin since it's a race tire. Less heat build up that way, but they also do not react well to pot holes and other items that we may hit on the highway.
