goodyear stock car special
has anyone ever used the goodyear stock car specials on ther cobras. they have the yellow writing on the sidewall instead of the white, are they good for racing, compred to the avons and bb's, i know they are slicks and bias ply but there cheaper than most tires and have a very high speed rating just curious

I have used them on my car for the track only. They give great traction but take some getting use to compared to BFG T/A's or TOYO's. They don't wear very good as they are soft and very stickey. There are several others on here that have used them a lot more than I have that will probably chime in soon.

Track only ...
These are pure slicks, although Roger Krause will hand cut a tread pattern if you wish. When new, they stick like glue (and throw stones) until they reach the limit, then they break loose suddenly. This is what slicks do, so maybe you are ok with that. I just discarded mine after three years, they got hard.
Better all around tire of this type is the Sports Car Special (the venerable "Billboard") - still not DOT, but a good all around tire for street or track. Made on the same carcass, but with tread. Very forgiving at the limit, you can tell when they are about to go. Depends on your level ... Sam |
Are these the ones that Nascar uses? If they are, I thought that Nascar uses radial tires now and have for quite a few years. At least they have said so (I think at least, guess I could be having a brain fart). They would be great for the track but they would sure wear out fast on the street.

i was also wondering could i use these on the drag strip as well, and how would they fair, i have a dragstrip and raodcourse near by and want to use same tire on each tarmac

I think Clois has used them too, he is an avid track participant and should have a lot of feed back.

I use these tire strictly for the track. They can generate a enormous amount of grip compared to a DOT tire. I switch to the vintage sports car special slicks from a Nitto DOT tire and the grip level difference is astounding! As for wear I have 8 track days on them with little wear. They are subject to flat spotting and after extended sitting they are not exactly round until they get some heat in them. Just for that reason alone I wouldn't us them on the street. Very difficult to get enough heat in them for a smooth ride. Mac

Put a set on Halibrand mag wheels and they went flat real quick. Left front went flat in about 10 days. I called Finishline motorsports, said they had epoxyed the wheels to stop porosity. Went to local tire shop just to see for myself. Air was coming thru the sidewalls. Put a set of Avons on the mag wheels and no more leaks. Tires and wheels set in rack until I want to change the looks of the car. Have been setting in rack for 6 months pressure was down 2-3 lbs. Mag wheels were not the problem. Put the Goodyear slicks on another set of wheels and will air up as need be. I have Trigo wheels with billboards on car most of time. Goodyear Billboards will lose about 3 to 5 lbs in 6 months.

Not that great on the drag strip. Even with a good burnout, they won't warm up enough to provide the GREAT traction they are capable of. It takes a full lap on a road course to get them hot enough to really work well. I've had the rear end wash out on me a few times on that "first lap" before the tires warmed up. You do have to be careful until then.
Even cold they do MUCH better than any typical street tire, I'm just saying they do WAY better when you get 'em hot. |
