Painting Goodyear Billboards
I opted to paint the lettering on my Goodyear Billboards, versus going with the original look or no paint at all. I used Ranger Tire Paint. It goes on fine and initially looks good - time consuming, of course but I like the look.
After driving awhile - doesn't look so good and comes off in spots - I was a little surprised that the paint really doesn't adhere to the rubber - so, it's easy to remove (a good thing), but also easily removed by driving the car in the elements. Anyway, are there any alternative sources of paint for tire rubber? Also, perhaps 'preparation' is the issue with Ranger paint - any input? Has anyone used this paint... http://i.ebayimg.com/t/WHITE-WALL-TI...qk1!~~60_1.JPG |
I initially cleaned the old paint away with lacquer thinner and a scotchbrite pad, applied two coats and it has stayed on very well. Now I just recoat it every year or so if needed.

I bot this stuff a couple of months ago to paint white walls on my modern radial tires on my old Jag: White Tire Paint Kit Rat Rod Hot Rod Classic Tire Paint | eBay
I have not yet used it, but I imagine that if it works well for painting/adding white walls, then it would be good for painting on Billboards. Just a thought... I have no connection to the seller of this product. |
Here's my process.
Clean off the old stuff with mineral spirits. Mask the entire tire. Use a utility knife and gently cut away the tape where you intend to paint. Use a spray can of white Plasti-Dip. 3 to 4 light coats work well. 30" dry time between coats. Use the same utility knife to trace around the painted area.......PRIOR to pulling the tape off. If you don't, the paint is so tenacious, it will lift off the tire while pulling off the tape. This will take about 2 hours per tire. However, it stays on for years. The Goodyears I just removed, were painted about 5 or 6 years ago, and the paint would have lasted years more. David |
