wheel spacers

Has anybody use wheel spacers on the rear of there cobra? I am not sure if this is a good idea or not, I have heard you can use them and I have heard you cant. The rims that I want to get don't come in the right back space for what I need and I was wondering if I can use wheel spacers to change the back spacing of the rim so they would fit my cobra. Any help would be great thanks.
