recommended tires for track and street?
Have 17" wheels and plan on 3-4 track weekends per year. Any recommendations?

Khumo Ecsta XS are pretty good too.
180 treadwear so they are reasonably sticky for the track and you get decent life out of them on the street. |
Just put Nittos on tonight; love them
compared to the BFG.. ROCK HARD tires.. anything may have tickled my fancy. |
Nitto NT01
If you behave on the street, they will last and never let you down. And they will hold 600+ HP in second easily. Once at operating temp on the track, they will grip like a slick. Heat cycle them before you put them on or the wear will be about 1/3 of what it can be. Stay out of the wet. Best of luck, |

Answer: To heat cycle before mounting:
Most retailers have access to ovens where they can heat and cool the tires on rollers with pressure or static. You usually have to ask and press them to call their suppliers to get the service. Just an example, Discount Tire (also American's Tire) offers the service for $20 bucks per tire. But you have to ask and have the local shops call their distribution house and you will get the right answer. After they are cycled, most suppliers put a small red circle stamp about half the size of a dime on the sidewall. Don't underestimate the effect of this. If you can give the tires a week or 10 days after the heat cycle is done you will get the best possible compound you can have on that tire. Gives time for the polymer chains to slowly link up and you end up with the same grip but much tougher tear resistance. |
Or you can do it on the track.
More effort but lots more fun. :) |

buy a cheap set of wheels and put a set of slicks on it when you go to the track. You will be amazed at how much contact one of these guys for some almost new slicks for cheap:
