Source for Avons

What is the source and going rate for Avons?

I am trying to decide on rims and tires and I read $400 a piece which seemed high to me.

For that kind of scratch you can get some killer 18" tires.

Roger Kraus Racing Ent., Inc.- Castro Valley, CA.
SascoSports Inc is a full-function racecar preparation restoration shop

And I hear they're worth every penny. BTW, search is your friend.

RodKnock 01-07-2015 04:09 PM

I may buy a set this year. Prices range from $377-$470 per tire depending on size.

Detroit Bill 01-07-2015 04:15 PM

I guess I only see them as getting more expensive over time. I think I am going to go 18's. I know lots of people do not like the look but it looks good to me!

I did search by the way, must have gone to quick because I was not able to find prices.

I believe the prices change each year. 2015 prices are posted. My Yoko's are aging out, so Avons will replace them.

If you like 18's, then that's all that matters.

Bill,

There are only two sources for Avon CR6ZZ tires in the US, Kraus and Sasco....and the price is the price. In a 15" tire the Avon is the gold standard.....good traction, decent in the wet and actually the life span for mileage is not bad (we have had reports of 20K with no track use)

Whatever you decide, 15", 17" or 18" remember that the ENTIRE car rides on four small contact patches and while many will spend HUGE amounts for horsepower and then run BFG TAs, your life, car and passennger are dependent on the tires. Do not skimp and do not choose "bling" over "stick"!

I am actually waiting for my new set of 245 and 295's from Roger Kraus right now! Nothing like the smell of good fresh rubber in the morning.

I like the look of 15s. Either way, in a powerful car that weighs 2500# and has a short wheelbase, get the best tires you can.

Its the only part of your car that touches the road, so get the best.

rodneym 01-08-2015 10:59 AM

They are the best [Avons] but has anyone else noticed how grubby they are?

Bernica 01-08-2015 11:04 AM

I'll take "grubby" over my current condition on all 4 corners!

Shame on you!
Flat tires  and a car cover :p.

Detroit Bill 01-08-2015 11:21 AM

That tire is beyond flat, I believe they have seen their day!

Mark IV 01-08-2015 11:26 AM

Normal condition for a year old billboard. They are not made with the additives for UV or other environmental factors.......race tires are to be used one time and thrown away!

That's exactly what Goodyear and Roger Kraus told me..."Those tires are made to buy on Friday, race all weekend then throw them out on Monday."

Live and learn, I guess!

new Avons

after waiting for a long long time, I finally managed to snare a set of Avons. The grip is phenomenal. There is no way I'd go to 17" or 18's. Ive seen too many guys with the big wheels & super wide tires get totally embarrassed in the curves by a car sporting 15" wheels and relatively "skinny" Avons.

Before the Avons, non period correct 16" wheels ( ugh ! ) :
