Default mystery magnesium wheels

Does anyone out there know if Halibrand made Cobra magnesium wheels in 16x8 and 16x10? I just bought a 427 S/C replica with these on the car from a dealer, who doesn't have any documentation on them. They are definitely magnesium, are 6-pin drive and look just like originals. I looked them over pretty good and can't find any numbers or the Halibrand name on them, so could be repros from another manufacturer?

Halibrand did NOT make 16" "Cobra II" wheels. They did make 16" Indy wheels, but those are quite different.

So in a word, no.

Are you sure they are mag? Did you take a sample to test?

Default mystery mag wheels

The wheels have places where you can see oxidation (white powder), they have the right color for magnesium wheels. They have been clear coated apparently some time ago, but finish has worn off in places. The previous owner tested a small spot of bare metal with vinegar to see if it would react, it did. I have removed them, they are extremely light for such big wheels. I wonder if Trigo or some other manufacturer tried to duplicate the Cobra II wheels in magnesium.

I have a set of 16 inch magnesium 427 s/c style wheels also. No markings. On a 1980's Contemporary build.

Thanks guys. I am glad I'm not alone legenmetals! Mine is a Contemporary also, I'm guessing build was in early - mid 90's as far as I can tell, it is #33237. Peter Bayer probably knows history of these wheels. Is he still around? I would like to get another one just like my front wheel to use as a spare.

Peters answer is ,"Contemporary offered both 15 & 16" genuine Magnesium Halibrand pin drive wheels in the late 80`s early 90`s. "
I`ve asked for more info and I`ll post as I, and if, hear more.

Well you learn something new every day! The Contemporary sales brochure and options list and order form from 1992 doesn't make any mention of a 16" wheel; just the recommended 15".
Thanks for checking with Peter.

Yep those are the wheels I had trouble attaching them to my post but anyone can go to my shared photos and see them. Sorry about the picture quality. I'll add more in a few minutes.

Thanks 1ntCobra - I get a "moderator has to approve before posting" message when I try to attch photos, and the post never shows up. Anyway I am dying to know how many were made, where distributed, or anything else I can find out about them. I plan to keep them on my car but need a spare one for the trunk and it would be good to know if some are still available in case I ever need more.

Spoke with Lynn and showed him the photos. His opinion is they may have been made by Halibrand because they were known for not marking all their wheels. He thought they may have been made for another application, but not for a cobra.
