Love my Avons but...
...has anybody talked to them (Avon) about making some 15's of the same size as on our Cobra's, only with say a 160 or 200 wear rating?
They are great tires but for my predominant street use they really pick up and throw the rocks. Cheers |
Buy a Mickey Thompson drag radial if that is what you want.

I've got the M/T ET Streets on the back of mine. I'll never shift to another tire as they allow me to put the power of my 482" side-oiler to the ground effectively.

I contacted Avon and they don't have any plans to put out a version with a harder compound. Darn.
The ET Radials won't fit my rear wheels (per M/T recommendations) and I don't believe they are V-rated. Plus I'm concerned about their cornering ability. I was hoping that if there was some support we could persuade Avon to change their mind. Unlikely, I know. |

I'm willing to give up a little of the performance for a bit more life on the street, and a little less rock-throwing. That's all I'm saying here. If it doesn't make sense to others I can't really help that, to each his/her own. That plus the $1100 every 1 to 2 years or so just for the rears. It comes down to why you buy a particular tire. You want top performance from a gummy tire. Fine. I wanted a V-rated 15" tire that looked period correct and performed great (I don't like the look of larger diameter wheels on Cobras). There are only three things wrong with this tire in my view: they wear very quickly, they throw stones etc., and they are heavy. None of which will prevent me from buying them again. But for my use they are a bit stickier than I need. Cheers, |

Ever noticed that there are some very desirable cars (CSX continuation cars, Superformance GT40 replicas) that wear BF Goodrich tyres? I wondered why until the obvious became obvious.....they are trailer queens, and they don't want stone chips from sticky tyres.

Anyway, best to give Dougal a call at Longstone tyres and see what he says, might well have a US outlet. You will find it hard to find anyone more obsessed or knowledgeable regarding tyres. One other option is these cheapies which have just become available in the UK (we are gettng spolit for 15" choices now!).....dont know anyone thats tried them, but they are V-rated. 255/60R15 Galaxy R1 GT Rasied white letters - assume these are available on the US. Noone I know of has tried them on a cobra yet. |

I went with the MT SR's and they are sticky but do throw a few rocks. Tread is not normal looking but they grip wonderfully...

Contact Mickey Thompson and ask they make their ST line up softer. It never made sense to me why the BFG, MT's, Coopers, etc are all a rock hard compound when they know the tire is predominately for muscle cars. I don't need a 440 tread rating and a tire that lasts 35000 miles when I hardly put 2000 miles a year on the car.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's in 275/40-17 Front & 335/35-17 Rear. I did not purchase them as the previous owner installed them. I've only had the Car for a week and I of course like most us want the "Billboard Look" but it's not going to happen on the particular Cobra as the large brakes limit going down to a 15" wheel. The roads here in So. Cal are probably some of the worst in the country so as far as tracking with these Michelin's it's not too bad at all unless there's a huge seam on the fwy of which just about any car would be subject to tracking. Also these tires have not thrown much if any up onto the fenders and seem to stick very well so far as with my short time behind the wheel. Ahh but there will be many hours of seat time coming soon. :D |
I put over 800 mile in two day on Avons bringing it home, with no more rock pick up then the street radials on our Audi. In fact there was no measurable wear over that distance, granted we haven't really pushed the car to it's limits yet.. The traction in straight line/cornering so far is just what we wanted. By the way the ride is better then we expected, with no tramlineing, or road rut hunting (witch is a surprise).
