Big news on 15" performance tires!
I had an interesting discussion about 15" performance rubber, with Brandon Kraus, this afternoon. With the trepidation about Avon closing down last year, they began to work with another company to design a replacement performance tire for our cars and others needing the 15" diameter rubber. He sent me some pics of the initial production samples for a 295/50-15 V-rated tire that will compete head to head with the Avons. It is the Classic Racing model made by Nankang Tire. I think Nankang is a subsidiary of Tireco. They look very good at first glance! My understanding is that these will be a Roger Kraus Racing exclusive. According to Brandon, they should be about $400.00 less, per set of 4 tires, than the Avon CR6ZZ set. They will start taking orders around August 26-27 of 2024 for an expected late November 2024 delivery date.

The sidewall looks like it has a little more vintage fat, rounded shape than the Avons, which is a really nice vintage look! I think the tread depth may be deeper on the Nankangs than on the Avons, as well. Take a look and let me know what you think. If you have any questions, I will try to get the info for you. |

Looks promising. I'm sure the GT40 folks are excited as well.
|
Do you have any information on what sizes they plan to make?
|
So $100 less per tire than the Avon's? If memory serves me correctly that puts them in the range of +/-$500 each?
|
Looks like an Eagle/Avon style tread pattern. I suspect excellent dry traction and significantly reduced water dissipation and traction on wet roads.

Thanks, Paul, for the update. So, $1600 vs $2000?? Can't believe there are no (Good) tires in the $250 range, 15" are a dying size.
Just bought a set of Pirelli P-7 Cinturato for the daily driver Jag@ $286ea. (245-45-17) @ Discount Tire. Also, a set of (Repo) Pirelli CN-36 Cinturato's $259 +tubes (205-70-15) for Ramco out of Classic Tire in the UK, those hurts the pocketbook, but nothing like $1600 for a set for the Cobra that will age out before they wear out, I have a year before the "Yoko's" need replacing. Lots of Food for thought. Cheers Tom. |
TommyRot....SOME PEOPLE actually drive their cars enough to wear out their tires before they age out.
|
Cannot seem to find:
DOT? Radial? For many Avon users these are key to the purchase. Sorry if I missed this .... |
I think Avons are now close to $600 per tire.

Oh'Karlos, I'm doing better than last year (1700 SPM) this year shooting for (2000+SPM), got to remember I live in the Pacific NorthWET  We take what we can get, two shows planned for this weekend alone  Cheers TommyRot.
|
WAXON...WAXOFF...shows are so much more fun than actually DRIVING :)
|
At least no trailer queen
Karlos, you do know that I drive to these shows . Now I'm not up for the Lard Ass, I mean "Hard Ass" driving award you win every year :3DSMILE: And yes getting there is half the fun, going to the vintage races a couple weeks ago, we had 3-Cobras, 2-Ferrari Dino, and an old 911 & 912 traveling together that was tons of fun, even the masses seemed to enjoy it too.

The 295/50-15 Avon is $655.00 per tire! |

That is one of the issues I plan to raise with him in our next conversation, Ed! |

Did I miss it? DOT rated? Radials or Bias?? |
Sidewall states "295/50R15 108V CVR5" so I'd call it a radial.
To the right of that and closer to the inside circumference it states "DOT 1UBMV" or "DOT 1U8MV", followed by date codes "9496 4723." So I'd call that DOT approved. These may be projected to be less costly versions of the current AVONs (aka NOVA today), but IMHO still on the pricier side for any 15" performance tire. |
