Default Goodyear G7's

Is anyone running Goodyear G7's?
They've been described to be as billboards with less tread for better dry grip. Same rubber compound and Roger Kraus rates them "9" dry grip in lieu of the billboard's "7".

I have run them for 3 years. Very good grip in dry. Very skittish in damp, dangerous in wet. Not for roads with irregular surfaces such as undulations, center crown etc. If you can put up with some occasional darting they are outstanding. I use 600 x 15's on the front and 700x15's on the rear. They are like a slick with "Chicken Scratch" type tread. Although there is a major lack of directional tread they must be mounted on specific locations on the car. They tend to follow irregularities in the road, on a good surface they can't be beat. Fair weather tire only.

Got my Bluestreak's on!
I had a minor panic that they were too wide and my wheels weren't "backspaced" enough under the car and they'd rub on the outer lip of the fender well. Close, but no rubbing!
These are the 600x15 front and 800x15 rear.
Sticky suckers! Throw gravel like crazy. Oh, the price we pay for grip.





Yes, the car is filthy, I've had my head under the hood getting ready for Tulsa, gimme a break...

Are you aware that they are a directional tire? They should be mounted to spin in a certain direction, and specific to which side of the car they are on. Need to be right if you are going to "Track" them.

God damn, that's a good looking tire. The Goodyear lettering is much closer to what it should look like over the billboards (smaller).

If they worked as well as the billboards, I'd switch to them in a second.

BTW, the tread doesn't look directional to me .

I know the Billboards are directional and came marked with white marker as to LR,RR,LF,RF with arrows pointing forward. It's not the tread pattern but the direction of the bias-ply. The GY BB's have serial numbers on 1 side of each tire. It looks like this example...55AV MB01 D5L. If your standing behind your car facing the front the SN's on the front tires should be on the left side of each tire and the SN's on the rear tires will be on the right side of each tire. Dont confuse the white sticker with the bar code as the serial number. This orientation is out of the RogerKrouse book and it includes all Goodyear and Avon radial and Bias-ply for rear wheel drive. I hope this helps.

Per Roger Kraus, they actually perform better than the billboards. Same rubber compound, but more of it. Less openness to the tread. BUT, it's for dry only. I'm told VERY unsafe in the wet.

Very nice looking tires and will likely be the ones I go with when it's time for replacements.... as a side note I did notice your inspection sticker appears to be expired.

Good catch Cajun Man,
I'm actually taking them off as I have a 1965 replica Inspection sticker on order. I have my real, current replacement registration and inspection stickers in the glove box and am going to go with the 1965 sticker on the windshield.
Illegal perhaps, but looks good and I would hope for a little leniency if/when I'm pulled over.

Oh, yes, I think I remember that race. June of '65 if I remember right. Had some rain earlier in the week.
Ken Miles had the flu and asked me to step in. Yep, son, that was a fun time.
That ole white smoke was from a blown head gasket, I believe. See, back in those days, they didn't have them fancy rev limiters like they have now, so we just had to go by the tach. And they just weren't that close to bein' right back then.
Oh, how times have changed, it's really sumptin.

Has anyone seen any kind of direction marking on the regular Cobra billboards? I just got two new rears and don't see anything on either side that signifies mounting.

These tires are definately NOT for the street and it says so on the sidewall. They will sandblast your car too!

Nope, not street legal.
I track the car and was tired of "agricultural racing" so I got more grip. Lots of warning at limit, then a slow gradual release. Easier to throttle steer with the good feedback.
On Roger Kraus tech sheet, x marks the serial number molded into each tire. It's only on one side of each tire.

Here's what the serial numbers look like. There's also the tire model number molded in, but that's 4 or 5 digits in a little oval. Find the serial numbers then you can match them to the appropriate rims.


You can see on the side of the tire "Racing Use Only Not for Highway Use"
They behave the same as billboards. A little flat-spotting, rough until warm, but when they're warmed up (3-4miles) they're smooth and sticky. They do throw rocks.
I think they look like a hundred bucks. Love 'em.

Folks:

I've had a set of G7s on my ERAFIA... and they look great. However, recently my son was out driving on Route 22 and ran across a stream of run-off water from a recent rain, did a quick 360 degree spin and backed it ever so slightly into the guardrail.

While damage was minor, affecting only the body, it will require some fiberglass work and a repaint of the back half of the car...

G7s are a dry road tire only!!!
