Default New magnesium Halibrands

I heard that Halibrand was showing new magnesium Cobra II (427 S/C) wheels at SEMA. Does anyone know anything about them?

I had posted earlier about asking M&A to make magnesium wheels (the magnesium available today is a little more stable and less prone to corrosion than the original magnesium Halibrands). However, the start-up costs would be a lot and might not be justified if someone is already geared up to make magnesium wheels.

I have a set on my car. Check gallery for pics. They are made by M & A for Halibrand. Beautiful wheels; you won't be disappointed if you buy a set.

Are they truly magnesium or aluminum? I had an original 289--wish I still had it--with mag wheels. They were a pain in the back side to keep polished. I learned it was best to leave them black.

The Sunbursts I had were cast alum, I think. Too heavy to be Mags.

The ones from Halibrand are true magnesium; yes, a pain to keep clean. I don't mind the grey/black color, makes it look period correct.

Do you have any more on these new magnesium Halibrands? Price? Sizing?

Gee, I think I'll spray-paint my polished-aluminum wheels flat gray.

They only come in 2 sizes; front & rear, 15 x 8 & 15 x 10, 6 pin hubs only. I think they were around $600-700/wheel. You would have to call Karen @ Halibrand to confirm. The guys at ERA were very impressed when they arrived for my car.

elric, your wheels look somewhat gold in the pics, is so, is this just part of the magnesium aging?

The Halibrand website does not show this wheel, but I'll give them a call. Thanks

That's some kind of powder coat they put on the center and outside bead; maybe to seal any casting issues.

elric, if Halibrand sealed the magnesium wheels, what then is a pain to clean?

If you look at the pic you can see the part of the wheel that isn't powder coated. It's the outside 3-4" circumference of the rim; not sure of the exact name but I've cleaned mine quite a few times already with metal polish. It looks nice for a month or so then starts oxidizing again.

Elric,

How do you like the SOHC? Can you give me any feedback on how everything worked out and the specific mods ERA had to do for it to fit? I've been slowly building my motor, Peter mentioned that the footboxes were different and I believe the motor mounts would be lower. I see you have an iron block and heads, I think it's still lighter than a BBC, but I'm curious what your experience driving it has been like?

I got bogged down in a remodeling job at home and have also built a new garage, hopefully this year I'll get some things organized in my life and order my car. excuses, excuses excuses...

Karen from Halibrand sent the following note today:

"We did have the [magneseum Cobra wheels] a while back, we made two runs of them and we are completely out of stock. We haven't set a production date on when we will make these again. We know there are a lot of inquiries on the [magneseum Cobra wheels] lately. I will keep your name on the list when I know something."

I did not ask her about price.
