Default Original Halibrand Center Cap?

First, did the original Halibrand wheel have a center cap? If yes, where can I get some? If no, was there simply nothing covering the center hole?

Thanks.

Not 100% sure, but I thought that they ran caps in the front but not in the back.

Did you see this thread? I'm not sure if they're original run Halibrands, but the front does have caps.

Halibrand made, makes , wheels and spinners. The small hub cap in center fits in hole of hub. I have made some for friends from time to time and they are easy to make out of round stock. I made a grove to hold o ring to hold in place. Any one with a lathe could make for you. Size of hole is diff. from one car to next so cut to fit would be best I would think. I have dozen sets of spinners with halibrand cast on them I will sell to members if it helps to make there car more period correct.

Can you please post, PM or email me the price of a set please. I don't have a set of magnesium wheels at the moment, but I would like to find a set in the future.

Therefore, one needs to have them made up, correct - there is no source?

Yes, caps are showing - I WANT THOSE CAPS! It's a little strange that no one out there sells center caps.

de Capell,

We've got caps that will fit our pin drive hubs. Usually they go out with the wheel package. Did you lose yours?

Default Halibrand Caps

The original cars came with two (front only) caps, they were machined from aluminum bar stock and used an "o" ring in a groove for retention. Some of the original car owners fitted two in the rear. This was on the early cars, they may have had four on later cars I am not sure.

Off topic but, I just saw this post:

"Now that's a brave seller looking for $2,000/wheel ($10,000/set) without knockoffs in this economy. I love the claim, "believed to be from Shelby Team." Uh, huh. Sure."

How many original cars came with FIA style pin drive 8.5" wheels? The Daytona coupes, racing 289 team cars and some privateers, a very small number from what I know. Those wheels were purchased in the early 1970's from the inventory of SHELBY AMERICAN parts that Ford Motor took over to provide replacement parts for the cars that Shelby produced.

The only wheels I know of that come with knock offs are replica wheels that have adapters. Original wheels were sold without knock offs because anybody buying them had a car with the knock offs already.

The price is high because they are original magnesium Halibrands not replicas, I should probably buy that $1,000 Thor hammer to go with them.

I understand why the price is high, but the seller has had several auctions without any bids. Tough economy and a limited market.

I personally like the looks of the wheels without center caps.

My car came with polished center caps, and they are wrapped in micro fiber rags and in the storage cabinet.

Well, my Cobra was purchased from the person that you built it for - my understand is that he may have purchased the original Halibrands after receiving the Cobra from you.

So, you are stating that you have them - could you post a URL - I'm buying?

The wheel itself doesn't matter, the caps go on the hub of the car, which can vary by make.

Comp cars and S/Cs had no rear caps, as there was nothing to "protect" (i.e. bearing underneath). As stated above, most street cars were fitting with them to look more finished.

I like the look of no caps on the rear, but then again I also like the comp look.

...and they're a little more complicated than just a press-fit chunk 'o metal. Getting them from ERA is definately the way to go.

Default Caps

Front only, be it SC, Comp cars, or street cars.

The cap is a "dust shield/cap"

The rears don't have bearings that need to be protected.
