Need new tires
Hi,
My tires have been great. but are simply getting old. I am running Goodrich Comp T/A 275/50R16 in the back and Goodyear Eagle GSC 245/50ZR16 in the front. Goodrich told me they don't make that size anymore. Any recommendations? I see references to Avons, Coopers and Goodyears.

I have 16" rims and can't find tires at all. At least not in the size that I want with the same tread pattern. If you find some post it here. I could use a set for my Compomotive rims.

FWIW I was at my speed shop this past week and they had some Mickey Thompsion performance tires that I will certainly consider. The ones I was looking at were 325 50 x 15 rears and 245 60 X 15 fronts (26" tall). They are DOT Rated and I think about a 90 treadwear. $208 for the rears and $178 for the fronts and no shipping. Of course other sizes were available but these things looked like they would have almost as much grip as the Hoosiers but with the high speed tread design.

Hello Omathisen,
I'm a new owner and haven't even received my rod yet, but with the threads here against the popular and available BF Goodrich T/As, I'm trying to find replacements. Now I hear you don't want tires 3/6 years old 'cause of tread flying off etc. What's an idiot(excuse me, an enthusiast) to do? 209

Two different questions/answers going on here. The first three posts in the thread are talking about tire options for 16" wheels, which may be challenging. There are few good options for 15" wheels (Avon, Mickey Thomson, GY Billboard).
If you search for tires on CC, you'll find find a lot of good info on the pros and cons.

I have found some tires in catalogs and websites for 16 inch rims. But let me find out if they are really there (available). It looks like the smaller size is no problem, but the bigger rear tires may require some flexibility in sizes that are a fraction larger or smaller but for 16 inch rims.

how r the M/T's...I was lookin at those in 15", Any pros or cons vs. the other tires out there????What is the widest you can put on a stock spf wheel???325 seems big???

OMathisen, I'm in the exact same boat you are in with the same size tires. The MT ET Street Radial II looks like they may be an option for the rear. The 275/50/16 differences are there but minor use this tire size calculator to show the difference http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html .4" difference in hieght. which will throw your speedometer off by 1.2% when it says 60 you're going 60.7mph.
For the front the MT ET Street Radial comes in a 255/50/16 which also is .4" taller than the ones we currently use. I've been looking into this for a couple of months now since I'm a cheapskate and don't want to switch over to 17" rims. Hope this helps!

If you cannot run 15 inch wheels, go with 17's where you will have a wider choice of tires.

Mickey Thompson just came out with some S/T radial tires that are available in the old school style and 15" sizes. Haven't checked to see if they have them in 16" sizes yet, but you should be able to find out a the JEGs website.

Thanks for the feedback. I have since got more information from ERA as to what tires will fit the wheel well. I have also talked to tire manufacturers and Compomotive. Everybody has been very helpful, and at this point I believe there are possibilities for my 16 inch wheels with either Hoosiers or Coopers.
The front is easy: a whole bunch of manufacturers have tires that will fit. It is the rear that is the issue with the bigger tires. I will post again once I have the tires on and tested. I am New York so that might take a while pending the weather.

I didn't re-read all of the posts (so it may have already been mentioned), but your best bet is to stick with the same tire manufacturer for all four corners. Some people have mixed and matched, but????

Tire choices for 16 inch wheels
I have come up with some choices for my 16 inch rims and would like to hear comments.
Goodrich and Gooyear have "traditional" tires -- 285/60/R16 and 295/50R16 --that will fit in the rear, S and T speed rated.
Cooper has a 295/60R16 - T rated. Looks OK.
And Kumho has a 265/45R16 with a W speed rating.
All of the above would fit and be within a reasonable range of my existing 275/50R16 Goodrich Comp T/A.
In addition, Hoosier has a wet radial 275/45ZR16. They say the tire is for competition and not street use, but what's the difference? I have also seen some posts where people have run wet tires for up to 20,000 miles on the street. And I have run wet tires in the past and have not had any problems.
There is also a 295/50R16 from Micky Thomson, which is intended for drag racing and "regular" street use, but they do not recommend it for what they call "hard cornering."
Any thoughts out there without confusing me further or forcing me to buy new rims.

Personally like Goodyear for "authentic name" part of it.
Unless you are drive a lot over 130 mph, our lightweight cars don't build up much heat whic causes tire failure. To me, "speed ratings" are set at loaded weight and thererfore we can exceed w/out concern due to our 50% loads. But that's just my opinion; not a scietific fact.
Let us know what you end up doing.

I'm getting ready to buy a set of tars and I need some good ole boys to tell me what they think. I like the Billboard look but Ive heard some cons on em. I have a new set of trigo 15s that I bought a while back. Tell me your opinion on GY, New MT, Avon, BFG. And if you have a photo of the new MTs or the AVONS please post it cause I dont have a clue about what they look like. Thanks.
