Could be, Jack. Unfortunately, the old oil went straight to a drain pan with a lot of other gunk. Couldn't really measure. Old tranny oil looked almost exactly like the new stuff I was putting in (liquid gold).
Not sure if groaning is a known symptom of low tranny fluid in a Tremec. Maybe the tranny gurus can verify? I was pretty convinced it was the rear end judging from the directional "feel"; especially since I've had the top up until last Friday...

But, that would be a midsummer doldrums kind of project...
Ray,

I took a look at the instructions on SCOF for drilling/tapping the rear end for a drain plug. It looks like a nice upgrade and would make the job a lot easier.

Have you ever run across any info regarding a basic recommendation regarding the miles between rear end fluid changes for a car that is only driven on the street? I'm guessing that it's similar to the maintenance requirements for the trans fluid.

the scof refererences the old ford rear end, not the new dana rear end. I still have never seen a formal fluid recommendation.

Doug, judging from this experience and what I saw, I'd say a change is called for after the first 500 miles, then another after 5000. $50 is cheap insurance.

I don't know if mine was ever changed after the initial break in as I'm the second owner. I'll put another couple of hundred miles and change it again just so I can see what's happening after this.

I think they're in the process of building a maintenance page/buyer's checklist page, but nothing is up on the site yet.

I changed the fluid (Redline MTL) in my Tremec after about a total of 20,000 miles, of which were at least 100, 1/4 mile drag passes and at least 1,500 miles on 4 different road courses, still looked like new!!!!!!!!!!! car is a 3100 pound 65 Fastback.......

Put in the GM recommend stuff cause I got it at cost at the local dealer, can't tell any difference in the 2 fluids........

In my race car, I change the fluid in the trans. (toploader) and the 9" rear once a race season.......five or six years now and no problems with either of them.........
