Yes, a .64 5th with a 3.27 would be a tad tall Depends on how you intend to drive the car most of the time. Too bad the R&G results don't specify trans & rearend ratios, it be interesting to see what the winners are running with.

I don't allow the engine to go past 4200. No need to thrash the motor. The 3.08 will give me 22 MPH in first @ 2500. I get 37 MPH at 4200 in first. With 680 ft/p torque at 1400, I have to be careful not to destroy my M/T's and have the wife *itch at me.
What a wide spectrum of owners we are. Your car has amazing engine specs, but you appear to drive very conservatively.

In contrast, at 4200 rpm I'm just gettin ready to nail the throttle. At 5000 rpm mine feels like a turbo has just spooled up. At 6000 rpm it begins to roar at the level I enjoy. At 7000 rpm I have to shift because the MSD rev limiter makes it sound like crap when it starts robbing spark.

And.......when I back off the throttle and look over at my silver-haired 59 year old wife, she grins back at me.

I run a 3.70 9" independent rear. 4-speed wide ratio transmission. 22# aluminum flywheel. Solid roller cam and other stuff. Goodyear Billboard tires.

My daily driver is a Toyota Yaris. 106 hp. I try to keep the engine speed below 3000 rpm. Gets 42 mpg. What a boring drive!

Hello everyone,
Thanks for all of the great information.
I have decided against changing gear ratios.
I did make an carburetor upgrade that has made a big difference.
When I built the car ( 14 yrs ago ) I bought what I thought was a 750 cfm Holley Street Avenger. After removing the carb this summer for cleaning I discovered that it was actually a 650 cfm unit.
I went to the Holley website and plugged my engine specs into their interactive carb selector. The software recommended several units, all of which were 750 cfm.
I decided on a 750 cfm double pumper with a manual choke.
The engine runs much stronger now. I bet I gained 50hp.
Anyway, I now happy with what I have now and I'm going to leave things as they are.

Thanks again,
Roger

Engine plays a big role in this for sure. I would say the 466 stroker w/700HP+ and 680 ft/p torque @ 1400 makes the 3.08 a sweet spot selection for that motor. SBs with less cubes build their power higher up in the RPM range, and rev higher as a rule (vs stroked BBs) so your gearing should take that into consideration, all imho.

Default just get a big block

it wont matter what gears you have.you shouldnt to dump the clutch to make it happen , with a big block you just blip the throttle and blam. its like a 2 stroke dirt bike and a 4 stroke , for every 4 gears and all the hard work on a 2 stroke ,you can get lazy on a 4 stroke.

what size engine? with a 351 the jump from 3 to 4 with 3.55 is not the greatest, with more cubes and torque the jump wouldn't be much of a deal. when we ran sedans way back the hot gear was 4.11 or 4.30 at hallett, course with 358 or smaller engines also, scca stuff.

“With 680 ft/p torque at 1400”

that is quite a number for 466 CI…. just off idle…
Id like to see that dyno-sheet, sounds incredible....

Maybe someone mixed up the spec sheet with one from a Caterpillar engine.

David

I absolutely interpreted your response in that manner. Kinda why I used the SMILEY face in my previous response.
