Strange-I wrote that very thought to you in a PM-5 hours ago. Hmmmmm.
The Summers Bros held the world land speed record (409 MPH) for piston-engined streamliners in the '60's with 4 blown Pontiac engines. The rear end held up.
Mark Williams=good too.

Yes, it was a stroke of brilliance. And while D-Cel can be just a tad bit "touchy," I would hire his expertise for this job in a heartbeat.

I called Summers Bros on the way home just to have a chat. Here's a cool tidbit - when I told him I had a Shelby Cobra (and then corrected him that it was a cobra roadster, not a mustang), he told me that they made the stub axles for the original cobras when Shelby was based in Gardenia.
They can make just about anything you want and told me to send him the pieces and he'd make me a 31 spline billet chromoly 4340 steel axle stub. They can do 35 spline and 40 spline too, but that seems like overkill and not sure if it'd fit.
Anyway, I also have a call into Bob P. and will probably have the local guys that rebuilt David's diff check mine out and do the assembly. The benefit to Bob's guys is they will know exactly what they are dealing with since they've done a bunch of cobras.

OK, why would you not want the place that is making the custom stubs to also put them in, along with the new seals, bearings, etc?

Just shipping an 80lbs thing across the country twice seemed sort of crazy, but ideally I'd obviously prefer that they do it....

Lou, that's cause I'm a rook. These were my first two passes (car #104) ever down a drag strip in any car. Here are the timeslips, what do you think? Just a rookie figuring out what the he11 he's doing or do you think my secondaries aren't opening fully?

OK, let me play Carnac for a moment (Chas loves it when I do that)..... I see, I see, I see the pair of stub axles coming in at $750, and I see the labor coming in at $200, and I see the misc. parts pushing it over the grand mark. Shipping costs are the least of the worries.

Summers implied quite a bit less than that but with shipping it to CA, it'd prob be a grand.

The only thing that is absolutely 100% guaranteed about this hobby is that everything costs more than you think it will.

Doug, kudos for going to the drags with your roadster.
Yea, the et and MPH add up but if you are making 485HP with that engine your leaving 100HP somewhere. Your MPH should be more than 10 mph faster. Of course no traction comes into play but that effects ET for the most part. I would start with carb and linkage, thats easy. Maybe your not making 485HP but you said FE right?
Also under CLASS for the other lane it said B/ED ( B Ecno Dragster!!!!) That's an NHRA class and with a 7.50 index. Man that thing should be flying and it shows NOT. I could be reading a letter wrong.
Your Class says JR so that seems right. Hmmm.
Well get that cobra fixed soon, good luck
Lou

It is a 427 FE, but it was never dynoed by the builder, just broken in on a run-in stand. Maybe I'll take and have it dynoed and tuned while its out of the car. I'll have time now that I'm sending my diff out for upgrades. ?

As for CLASS, this was at a sort of family and friends drag day sponsored by Volvo (Fullchat289 set it up), so they may not have overly accurate on classes. There was a wide variety of top fuel style dragsters, drag motorcycles and something that sounded like a jet. Fun day.

Here's another question, if I upgrade the stub axles, should I upgrade the half shafts too, or leave them as the weak point? I'm not going to be drag racing regularly or anything, but it is a lot easier to do it right now and I know they are also prone to breakage. Thoughts?

Uhhh, Carnac "sees" the outer stub axles from ol' Shel as being made to the same "demanding" specs that your inner stubbies got. Soooooo, upgrade those inner stubbies and your half shafts, then take it to the strip for a test, and after about your third run we can repeat this entire thread.

Doug, to get more out of it at the track, look at some basics first.
what kind of fuel pump, if its mechanical, can it supply enough fuel at WOT.
what size fuel lines do you have. hows the carb jetted

I'll have some time to play around with engine tune. After speaking with Mark Williams and Summers Bros, I'm going to send it off to Kirkham. I spoke to Tom and he said he can't recall seeing any broken stub axles. He also told me that mine is 30 spline (apparently I need to get my 6 year old to count next time ), same as theirs, but he did see a CSX in a few weeks ago with the same problem and found that the steel used in the axle was too soft.
He did ask one question that I'd like opinions on - should I change from a 3:31 rear to a 3.54 rear. I have the TKO600 with the .82 overdrive. He said they install the 3.54 10:1 over the 3.31. Thoughts?
