I have not qualified for the 24HRS of LeMans so my diffy will have to continue to run sans oil cooler. I think I could branch off my rear brake cooling ducts and provide a little ram air cooling to the housing at track speeds ?? Doesn't help much on PCH in stop and go traffic........I have seen small coolers for less but I can believe someone going over 1K. I asked the question to Nick because I respect his knowledge.

I have patterns for the diff cooler. I'll try them against the car and see if they look workable. The rest is plumbing and a pump. I'm guessing we could do a bit better than $1150 but a good bit of that would be you paying yourself beer and pizza to put it all in.

Where are you getting your stubs from, and what's the guesstimated delivery time?

Uhhh, lemmeee tell you... the weekend after I got that thing, my neighbor lost her IPOD back behind the dashboard of her Audi. It friggin' vanished like Houdini. She asked for my help and I put that little bugger down through the AC outlet, found where it was, removed a panel, and voilà I'm the hero. That event alone was worth the price of admission.

I sent my stubs off to Roger Bolick in Austin (Exact cobra) on Nick Acton's recommendation. Roger has done a lot of cobra diff repairs and has a race shop in TX build the stubs for him. He's collaborated with them to build the highest strength stubs for the cobra application. Roger measured and tested my stubs to be sure they would fit exactly as compared to his (since there are minor difference in the "same" stubs and it has caused problems before). I hope to get them in the next week or so.

By the way, D-Cel has agreed to analyze the steel in my original stubs and we will report back why they failed.

It is hard to use an inspection mirror to inspect a cylinder through a spark plug hole though...I got the camera with the small head that will fit (or at least that's what Cobra Inc got).

Have used Boroscopes in aviation for years with the smallest heads you've ever seen. When a mechanic tells us he/she was working in the cockpit and just failed his/her tool box inspection.....Guess what NDI gets used......When a wire harness, that is buried in the wing or fuel cell, doesn't check out, we go in with the little beauty. I am a believer !! My old Roush heads were Boroscoped through the spark plug bores and through the intake manifold and info'd back to Roush..............Think I just need a light and telescoping inspection mirror to spy the plug......If its there and I cannot touch it, then it is Academic.......Good to hear that an inspection and test will be done on your failed parts. That way when mine fail we can compare Rockwell readings.........Good luck on fab and install.

Well, after 7 months, Christine finally came home on Tues eve.

She earned the name "Christine" during the repair as she fought everything the whole way like a car possessed. You'd think the drivetrain we pulled out was from a different car the way it went back in.

Along the way, a number of upgrades were made (although none enough to justify the time it took).

After 3 tries to get replacement stub axles (the original problem was a broken stub axle), I caved and shipped the diff off to Kirkham (the process leading up to this is what took most of the time). After consultation with David K., I ended up replacing my entire diff (same case as mine) which had a Auburn LS with their upgraded axle design and TrueTrac LS. It was a PITA to get it out and a MUCH bigger PITA to get it back in and I don't want to do it again. So stronger is better for me. I'll sell my old CSX diff after I endure the wait to get new axles. Despite Kirkhams and CSXs "all being the same", they are not and it was not easy to get it reinstalled. But it's in now.

While we were waiting on the diff, we also pulled the engine, changed out the oil pan to one of Kirkham's new beauties (that I've been sitting on since the promo offer a year ago), upgraded the clutch and changed the bell from a Lakewood to a QT. Then we ran the engine on a stand to be sure the pan didn't leak since unlike my Canton, it is not easily removed/adjusted when in the car. I also upgraded the coolant tubes to Nick Acton's SS pieces and the fuel lines from the pump to the fuel log with an original hardline set up.

Even the motor mounts needed to be shimmed differently when we put the motor back in. WTF Christine.

But it's in, runs well (always did) and is leak free (so far). Not many miles on it yet, but not a drop of fluid on my garage floor either. I'm just glad to have her back.

Here's Christine in the foreground leaving her temp home of 7 months.
