I agree with jwd. I tried the gap at first and had trouble with third hanging up. I preloaded it so the TOB stopped chirping and my shifting improved. I'm using a McLeod TOB. I believe the extra movement gives the cones time to slow the heavy TKO gears for a better mesh. JMO
