Face plating and pro shifting remove the little engagement teeth on the synchros and replace them with a fewer number of much larger teeth. It just makes it easier to get into the next gear quickly, but it can make it extremely challenging to downshift and drive on the street.

Those types of trannies are referred to as "crash boxes".

I tried face plated gears by mistake. Drove my Cobra for over six months with them. I could not shift without a "loud" cluck which Coach could hear from a hundred yards or more. It sounded like the tranny was breaking every time I shifted.
You go from 30 something teeth to "seven". You can not miss a gear, even if you forget the clutch. But for a street car "no way".

I changed to the Liberty street upgrade. That was perfect for the street. Smooth and fast.

I originally had the .64 gear. Hated it. So I asked the guy I bought the trans (Hanlon Motorsports) from if he ever has a customer that did not like the .82 to swap with me He found a guy. All I paid for was labor and the synchronizer upgrade

We routinely talk people out of the .62 on new builds. Most do not cruise fast enough to make it work well and most Hi Po engines are not real happy at 1700-1900 rpm.

Yes ACHiPo
I shipped my parts to them and they did the upgrade then shipped back to me. I had Eddie install the new / reworked parts. Took about 1 1/2 hrs.
I have bought shifters in the past but they never helped. The last two I used the stock shifter with the upgrade and they worked great.
In my opinion, (I'm not the smartest guy on the block) shifter don't help enough to justify the cost. Spend the money on the inside of a TKO, TKO II, TKO 500 and TKO 600.
As it was explained to me the bronze synchronizers are to heavy to shift fast. They use carbon fiber bushing to help slow down the synchronizers.

I have the .82 and one approach is merely to stay in 4th. If I did it again I would still have a .82 with the mods that Brent suggested. The TKO 600 (stock) has it's own rhythm and I removed a Jordan shifter and went back to the stock lever because it was slower. And more in tune with the 600. More RPMs makes the package sweeter all around. OK, a touch more for fuel and noisier. But the motor might actually be happier.

We talk about the fifth gear ratio but never talk about the torque range of the motor nor tire size, and rear end ratio that all play into the equation.

Does your motor have the torque at 2,000 rpms (which I consider to be a good cruising range) to cruise down the hiway smoothly, without trailer hitch jerking?

You can change tire size or rear end ratio to help.

I can count 11 different Cobras in our group that can cruise at 1,900 - 2,200 range with easy.

Big blocks and small block with carbs, that I had driven or rode with. Rears end are 3.31, 3.54, 3.55, 3.25. Tires, this I'm not as sure about but I would say 26" - 27" tires.
All have .64 fifth gear.

I have been around several that cruise at 2,800 - 3,000 rpms though the years but they were guys not in our immediate group. I kept wishing they would shift before the motor came apart but they loved the sound. Each to his own.

You can pick your parts. Build your car. If you don't like something then spend the time and money to change it till you like it.

Well said Dwight. I have the .64 fifth gear in mine and I love it. My motor doesn't like to cruise much under 2000 RPM, but it works out perfectly on the highway. 2300 RPM is about 70 MPH.

No argument from me. The original poster was talking about 55-60. 4th gear is a more than fine for those speeds I think. My diff is 3.46 and I think that works pretty well with the .82.

With my somewhat meager 500 ft/lbs I prefer to have a few more RPMs if I am forced to take evasive action. I am not always fast enough to add a shift to the mix. So some of my preferences are designed to offset my shortcomings.

I am running 373s and a 335/35/18 Nitto Drag Radial tire. Not sure what the tire height is on those tires with out looking up. And yes almost all my cruising on freeway is at 55-60 because of the speed limits...and traffic. The .64 is not fun at that speed and in 4th it's fun but gets to loud for even my "young ears" after a while.

Just finished reading this thread... lots of interesting comments. Love it!

I've owned SPF-1004 since 2001... BB 460 with Tremec 3550 (3.27 1st and 0.68 5th) and a 3.73 ring and pinion. Always hated 1st and 5th.

Just ordered a new TKO-600 from Liberty's Gears (2.87 1st and 0.82 5th) with the following...

Upgraded – Synchronized

I have a McLeod twin disc that I bought from Brent. I really like it. Pedal pressure is not excessive and it never slips or chatters.

Just realized I'm not getting notified of new posts so I need to fix that. As far as the clutch setup is concerned, the Tremec is maxing me out for January, so it will have to wait until February. Not a problem here though, since it's snowing.
