Ummm - assuming this is not an April fool, you would not be talking about the round rubbery bung thing that is put into the tailshaft opening for transit only, would you?

hey guys, The piece was in a small white box included in the large box with my TKO. My TKO was shipped dry, so maybe it is some sort of shipping plug. The box has a part number on it...2606154 and says "oil deflector". It is described as a metal ring 3.25in. across with black rubber in the middle and a 3/8in. hole in the rubber. I have just completed my Cobra and have been doing shake down runs with no problems. I have found no leaks and the Tremec shifts great! Just got to wondering what this extra piece was. It looks like it would fit over the tail shaft allowing the trany to be shipped with fluid in it. Still curious. thanks guys

Are you referrong to the rubber bootie with a metal ring that seals the shifter hole from leaking out fluid, or worse yet, letting debris into the tranny? It goes over the shifter handle and bolts to the case.

Mr. Fixit, No I had a seperate rubber piece that seals the shifter hole. However, I did have a mid-shift conversion on my Tremec. This piece may have been used if the owner was using the rear shifter location, as most Cobras do, hence the forward facing shifter. I did not want the forward facing shifter. My shifter is quite different and came with it's own boot and a block-off plate for the rear hole. This piece still would not fit over a shifter (3/8in. hole) and has no holes for bolts....the metal ring is only about 3/8in. wide. Still curious...may have to call Tremec with this part number for info.

I have a 3550 that leaks fluid from the rubber dust cover on the mid-shift conversion installed by the folks form whom I purchased the transmission new. Turns out after much research that it is missing the "Oil Deflector" which is listed as Part #2606154 in the mid-shift conversion kit but nowhere in the instructions is this part ever pictured or referenced as to how it is installed, which explains (somewhat) why the person installing the kit never put it in. Now I am trying to track down this part and how to put it in. Today I received the part from one dealer and it has obviously been pried out of a used transmission and is bent up, so the search goes on. I have attached a picture of the part to clarify the descriptions I've seen here.

Powrby4d, Yes that is the part!! After about 1000miles I did develop a leak from my tranny...just a single drop every now and then. When I built my Cobra I built a removable service hatch around the shifter. After removing the shifter on the Tremec I was able to figure out how the piece fits: The oil deflector fits on the bottom part of the shifter, under the mounting plate. The metal ring on the "deflector" fits snuggly into the round housing just above where the shifter engages the gear selection tabs. I know this may not be very clear, but once you have the shifter removed from the tranny it will be clear where this piece fits. I now have almost 6000 miles on my Cobra and not a hint of a tranny leak!
Hope this helps, Flatliner

flatliner - good to know this has happened to someone else and is reasonably simple to resolve. I am curious as to whether the rubber funnel part goes up or down, but as you say perhaps this will be obvious when I take the shifter turret out I assume that the entire turret has to come off in order to fit this underneath. I am also curious as to whether this is a "press" fit (requires force like a seal) or whether it is just placed between in such a way that it cannot move. The dealer who sent me the bent-up used part has agreed to try and locate a new one, so I hope to be back on the road soon. Many thanks for the info.

Also how does the thing get installed, I cannot find in the manual. It appears that the deflector is held down with clips, does something else go over it?

I was lucky enough to find my original one thrown in a box with the spare clutch parts by the tranny builder who did not know what to do with it.

However, this fellow claimed to be able to order me a new one:

I will look in our mid shift kits and look at this part. I know we don't
have a spare in stock but can order it. The price will be around $85 if the
price is the same.
===============================
I had to figure out the installation on my own. In a nutshell, you remove the outer boot and shifter by removing the two large bolts on the sides of the shifter turret, then remove the turret itself from the top of the transmission. Clean all the old gasket gunk off the mating surfaces without dropping anything down into the whole -- I stuffed clean rags into the hole to avoid this (it is also easy to get loose carpet fibers in there). The oil deflector is a press-in fit, and it installs against a shoulder inside the turret with the edge lip facing downward. I flipped the turret upside down and put it flat on a block of wood to avoid cracking, then placed the oil deflector in, centered carefully, then I put a hole saw of similar circumference to the edge of the oil deflector on it, then with another block off wood on top of the hole saw a few firm hits with a heavy hammer in the center seated the oil deflector nicely. Reassembled the whole thing and no leaks since.
Good luck.

Oh, BTW, not to belabor the obvious but when re-assembling the turret be careful to completely surround all the bolt holes for the turret cover with sealant, and use the correct torque specs per the manual for the mid-shift kit.
