Default Ford AOD in a Cobra

Hello,

Is anyone running a Ford AOD in their Cobra? I have a built C4 racing transmission in mine but feel I could really fly if I had another gear. I believe the final drive in an AOD is .62 . It seems like that would make an incredible difference in top end speed if you have enough motor to turn it.

Any comments or thoughts would be appreciated. I have plugged the numbers into some of the top speed/acceleration calculators and the numbers are unbelievable.

Thanks in advance.

Mine's not on the road yet, but I'm running a Lentech Street Terminator Plus AOD.

With 580HP, I wouldn't use a stock AOD, as it wouldn't last long.

Default AOD

Thanks for your reply. That is exactly the transmission I was thinking of switching to.

I was wondering how it fits? Is the AOD longer than the C4?

I know that many people look down on automatics, but for me I prefer an automatic in any performance car. The automatic shifts much faster than I can in drive, plus you can always shift it manually if you want a different RPM shift point anyway.

Thanks for your reply. Please keep me posted on how you like the AOD in yours once it is completed

Sincerely,

Scott

Ps My Cobra "only" has 452 hp. I was going to put a NOS kit on it for an extra 125 to 130 hp when I came up with my user name. I would change it to Unique450hp but I'm not sure how to do that and keep my gallery the same, etc.

Not sure how much longer an AOD is than a C4. I didn't have any problem fitting the AOD in my Hunter, but I have the '96 wheelbase version.

Scott. I have an AOD behind my petty stock F.I. 302. It's been in 18 months and almost 15,000 miles. I've autocrossed it numerous times and have had no problems. The rear end is a stock 3:27 which provides good gas mileage, 22.1 at 75 mph on the Interstate, and yet allows the car to accelerate with some authority. Almost all of the other Cobra owners have laughed at me but when they have driven the car they have been favorable impressed. There is a company in Canada, Toronto I think, which makes a race ready AOD. Also there is a guy in Toledo, Ohio, who swears on the AOD. He has many horsepower like you. He's a automobile salesman. Wish that I could help more. John

Default Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I do have a couple of questions for you.

1. How many RPM's are you turning at 55-60 mph?

2. What is your top speed?

3. How long is your driveshaft?

Thanks

Scott

HEY, SCOTT - - - -

I HAVE AN AOD IN MY EXCALIBUR. I LOVE IT. DANA BRISCOE OF WOODBRIDGE, VA MODIFIED IT AND INSTALLED A CUSTOM SHIFT KIT. I HAVE GREAT CONTROL AND CAN MAUALLY SHIFT - UP OR DOWN - AT ANY SPEED. I'VE PROBABLY GOT JUST UNDER 300 HP BUT WITH GOOD "GEARING" MUCH CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED. (SO SAID THE MAN USING A WASHING MACHINE MOTOR TO PULL A FREIGHT TRAIN).

AT 70 MPH IN O.D. I'M CRUISING AT ABOUT 1950 RPM. THE BEST PART IS WHEN "HITTING THE TWISTIES" IN THE VIRGINIA MOUNTAINS I CAN LOCK OUT THE O.D. - DROP IT INTO SECOND AND RUN LIKE HELL BETWEEN 3000 AND 5800 RPM. I CAN PLAY IT LIKE AN ACORDIAN - RIGHT FOOT GAS - LEFT FOOT BREAK - MUCH EASIER TO CONTROL WEIGHT DIST CHANGES WHEN YOU ARE NOT CLUTCHING AND SHIFTING. VERY STABLE. SOMEWHAT UNCONVENTIONAL, I KNOW, BUT IT WORKS FOR ME.

TOP SPEED (THAT I HAVE SEEN "ON THE CLOCK") WAS 135 MPH. AND I STILL HAD SOME THROTTLE LEFT. ONLY PROBLEM IS WHEN I GET INTO THE ERA WITH 550 HP AND A TOP LOADER I HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE AGAIN.

Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY

BLACKJACK

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks, I appreciate the information. I think that is probably the route I will take.
