Default Ident Of Trans Help!

Hello out there, i just picked up a cobra from my uncle he started to build it in 91 and never finished. I've got most of the parts but i'm quickly finding out it there might be a few changes that need to be maid. The car came with a 460 marine motor and a four speed side loader out of what he says was a 68-69 mustang.
The trans has 10 tooth front spline, 32 tooth rear spline and the ratio is 2:78 wide ratio. I'm wondering if this tranny is the one for the car. I also have the numbers off the trans if that will be of any help. Thanks for the input this seams like a great resource so let me know what you guys think

Sounds to me that you might have a wide ratio four speed toploader. To get the true info go to this site

David Kee Toploaders

Use your ID to cross reference with Davids ID Chart,

Thanks for your reply. I was told it was a sideloader and had jst took my uncles word. I pulled the motor last night a did not think to even look at the trans until i read your post . went down to look at it and it is indeed a toploader. I went to the David key site and could not find the numbers though. They are:

C8AR-7008D & W2-022068

Once again any help on where to find out about these numbers
would be appreciated.

The casting date is 1968, based on the above info. You might be one tooth off on the rear spline, as 31 spline is the correct count. Measure the diameter of the input. It should be either 1-1/16 or 1-3/8 inch.

Also, there should be a little metal tag near the front of the tranny by the bellhousing....it will have another ID number on it that you can use to correctly ID what tranny it is....it will give you more of a clue as to what internals it has...

Thanks guys since this post I've found out that it was out of a 68 Mustang, its a wide ratio trans for a small block (308,351ci) so I think I'll be selling this one so I can get the correct trans for the car. I was thinking of going to a five speed. Thanks again!
