Default Clutch slave cyl vs Throw out

Any body got the pros and cons of both these types of clutch actuation? Which are the best ones to go and buy for both types?

I have a preference for slave cylinder mounted outside of the bellhousing.

Easy to work on, easy to see what is going on and very easy to adjust and is much cheaper.

Requires fabrication of a mounting bracket. Requires a very small amount of physics ( hydraulics ). Requires a working knowledge of trigonometry. May have problems with frame clearances.

Just my $0.02

Default clutch slave cylinder

Adrian, I have a bellhousing mounted slave cylinder that I purchased from www.fortesparts.com and I love it. No hassles at all and Mike Forte is a standup guy to work with!

A hydraulic throw out has a more precise feel and less wasted travel, there's not a bunch of stuff seating and flexing. Another benefit is that they are self adjusting like a brake caliper. I use a Tilton and am very happy with it.

I installed, and have run a McLeod hydraulic T/O for over two years with no problems

PRO:

Simplicity
No clearance issues
Great Pedal Feel

CON:

If any of the numerous quad rings or o rings decide to leak, the only way to repair is by total removal. Plus, any catastrophic leaks usually result in a destroyed disc.

In older McLeod units, the double o-ring M/C and bleed line fittings were apparently prone to leakage. McLeod now uses an improved design, and it looks pretty foolproof. Though I never had any problems with mine, I did have my unit updated by McLeod with the new fittings.

When you install an hydraulic T/O, it is critical that it is set up correctly. Correct clutch finger to thrust bearing gap is critical, and it it always advisable to set up a proper pedal stop. Use of DOT 3 is also mandatory, as other types of fluid may deteriorate the seals.

Hope this helps.

Bud
