Default Which gearbox?

I've just bought a 408 stroker to fit in my next project. It's producing 490 BHP and 480 ftlbs of torque.
What's the best gearbox to use?
It has a centreforce clutch.
I'd really like a 5 speed, but have been advised to stick with a toploader.
Any advice?
Thanks
Simon

For a road car I would go with a T56 - six speed - very nice gearbox. I have one behind a 4 litre Turbo six (around 350 hp) - excellent close ratios. They also come in the Pontiac GTO, but with different ratios (taller overdrives).

What about this T56

http://www.g-forcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-56.asp

Rated at 900 horsepower and 800 ft-Ib of torque, almost straight cut gears, changeable triple cone syncos, and you dont have to change your rear end ratio for race days. What I like is the 0.86 fifth and 0.75 sixth options, this makes a close ratio, for my app with higher revving Nascar type engine a 4.10 final drive ratio is in order which gives me 180mph at 7000, and 2300rpm at the speed limit!

Rockland Standard Gear make several versions
for the Corvette, Mustang/kit cars and Viper, the Viper trans has about the best shifter position compared to the original TL, the rest are to far back.

Toploaders are bullit proof.
But if you"must have" a 5th gear go with Tremec.

The Tremec is an easier"fit".

Default Which gearbox

The Tremec TKO has a reasonable first gear and overdrive, and is great for a road grunt engine Cobra, but I wouldnt consider one for a higher revving smallblock or a big block for a start they have crap ratios, big gaps, and I wouldnt like to put 650bhp through one, but on the other hand the same coy makes the T56, and these are considered to be weak in the mainshaft, so I dare say if you uprate the mainshaft to 30 or 31 spline they are great!

I think I am at the top end of the scale as far as horsepower goes so I dont want to do it twice so the T56 G-force will do it, I had a Jerico on order but commonsense prevailed and I have gone for a synco box as a compromise!
