Default clutch disc recommendation tko 600/ 486CI FE

Care to share any good experiences with a particular clutch disc? I plan to run an 11" disc and steel flywheel behind a 486 ford Fe. There are so many clutch discs on the market...its overwhelming...

Hi Steve,

Call "Red" at McLeod......tell him what you have and let the experts give you a recommendation. Typically when you say 11" versus any other dimension you are going by the seat of your pants. Talk to people that can give you a recommendation for Clutch, pressure plate, bell housing, throw out bearing , internal/external actuator etc. a complete system.

Good Luck,

I've had good luck with the Hays S/S clutch kit.....

I think I'm going to try the Zoom clutch kit next time...they have a street/strip setup (11") in Summit Racing for just under $200.

Default parts

Tony,

I talked to "RED". He recommended a 12" clutch disc, organic on one side and kevlar/asbestos on the other and a 2400 lb diaphragm style pressure plate. The goodies are on their way from sumitt. Thanks for the contact info...

Steve, did you order your flywheel through him as well? I've noticed that many FE flywheels for cars only have patterns for 11/11.5" setups. My new Fidanza aluminum flywheel only has that pattern....

Steve,

I am running a kevlar clutch and I really like it so far. In the past I have ran both the Hays and the Zoom clutch and I think they are both good applications for street/strip.

Blykins,

The Mcleod parts I ordered are as follows:

28 pound Steel Flywheel #463215
Pressure plate #360821
Disc 260873R

Mcleod tells me that the bolt pattern on the flywheel/pressure plate is the 11.5" pattern but the 12" clutch disc fits within the bolt pattern.

Also, the R after the disc # means "reverse hub". I am running a TKO 600 which has the 1 1/8 x 26 spline input shaft...apparently this is a standard chevy spline pattern and diameter. But the hub needs to be reverse oriented for some reason.

I ordered the parts through summit

Steve

So you can run a 12" disc on an 11.5" pressure plate? I didn't know that. Is that true for almost any size? i.e. can you run a 11.5" disc with an 11" pressure plate?

Blykins,

Talk to Red the use of a 11.5" with a 11" plate will be determined by torque of the engine, transimission type, type of pressure plate and several other variables that I probably know nothing about.

The guys who know are the people that are hip deep in the details of these applications every day. The reality is that you need to look at the space from end of the engine shaft and the yoke at end of the drive shaft as a complete system and get the right components in that system to meet the needs of the application.

Default Clutch

I am running that clutch combo behind my 489 and love it. No chatter, easy on the leg

BTW for Blykins, ALL 12 inchers dont fit 11.5 inch flywheels. This 12 incher uses a cover that is drilled to fit an 11.5 inch Ford clutch

Its a super setup for CJ cars and any Tremec equipped FE or 385 series Ford
