Levy Racing Bellhousing BLANKET...
Does anyone here have experience with a ballistic bell housing blanket that Gordon Levy Racing offers for the T5 or Tremec? It covers the bell housing (not the trans) and is apparently custom fit and bolts to the back of the block. Price is $229 and appears to be a less complicated way versus a Lakewood or McLeod scattershield. Here is the link:
http://www.levyracing.com/performanceparts/index.html
I'm in no way suggesting that it's better than a 40lb 1/4" steel scattershield that is a royal PITA to install and dial-in. I've just stumbled on this alternative and I've heard many positive things here on CC about Gordon, his shop, and the cars he builds.
Anyone here seen this blanket on a Cobra?
Thanks for the inputs...much appreciated!

No experience with the blankets, have always considered them a partially effective bandaid.
I recently installed a Lakewood bellhousing on my Pond 482. I was very easy to install. The bore was 0.000" right to left and only 0.0025" off top to bottom, well within acceptable tolerances. It took 10 minutes to check with the dial indicator. I'd heard that Lakewood's quality control had much improved. I'm a believer now..

Gordon has been a straight shooter in the few dealings I have had with him. I would ask him if these blankets are rated for this purpose. I heard rumblings that the blankets are only rated for use over an automatic tranny bellhousing and not necessarily for a standard tranny bellhousing. I have no way if verifying if this is true.
If it turns out they are rated for this purpose, I may also go this route as my Lakewood is being a real nightmare to fit around my frame rails even after cutting a chunk out of it to fit. The blanket would definitely be an easier alternative if it is rated for the purpose by SFI and accepted by SCCA so I can use it on track days. Besides, I really like having my legs attached to my body and would like to keep them that way.

Guess I'm odd man out. In my dealings w/Gordan he was less than professional. He built a FFR for me 3 years ago and it was a real mess when it rolled off the truck (torn seats, warpped hood, worn springs, etc).
Go with the Lakewood.

Not to get in a pi$$ing contest....
Gordon IS a straight shooter. I asked him about the Blanket about a year ago. He said it would work for a standard.

Dave, that about equals my sentiments on the device. But I come from the school of "If it ain't broke, then don't fix it." My car (clutch included) is running quite well right now and I know that pulling everything apart will just create more to deal with. Rather than tear down my car and do the whole Lakewood routine (which I will certainly do when the clutch starts showing its age), for now I'm looking at this blanket as a "something is better than nothing" approach to the problem.
It just sure would be nice to hear at least one testimonial on this product. Better yet, a pic of one installed (and it doesn't even have to be a Cobra...I just want to see one in a car).

Mike-no pi$$ing contest requested. Good you feel the way YOU do. Considering you input, I'll say Levy is a 'selective' straight shooter. I ended up sueing him over my car. As my atty said, Buyer Beware.

Dean, They're your feet
Hey Chris,
I agree. I've seen what you are referring to first hand. I don't think I would trust my feet to some guys racing blanket either.

Dean,
Have you seen the new safety bellhousing that Mike Forte is selling? It is amazingly small- about the same size as a standard aluminum bellhousing, and from what I can gather, SFI rated.
This is probably the route I'm going to take when I get ready to put my engine in next spring.

Bob,
Interesting....only 20 lbs. Not SFI rated yet (according to their web site), but it did pass SFI testing (whatever that means).
I'll probably give Gordon a call after the holidays and just simply ask for some references that are using the blanket, or for some pics of one installed. I'm not going to go in blind on a $230 blanket unless I have some assurances that it will install rather easy and provide the "bandaid" I'm seeking for now.
Thanks everyone for your inputs (good, bad or indifferent).

Bob,
Thank you for the link. I wrote an e-mail to one of the respondents about this blanket thing.
The Forte bellhousing looks small for my clutch and flywheel set-up. I'll have to investigate further. What I'm interested in learning is how Forte's set-up is going to get the SFI rating with half the weight? Why haven't Lakewood and McLeod done the same thing all these years, especially with weight conscious racers to sell to? Something doesn't add up to me.
I'm probably 10% confident on this blanket thing at this point. No one seems to be using it, and it seems largely untested. While it's better than nothing, it may not actually be an effective solution. And I'm not sure I want to be the guinea pig, if you know what I mean.
Regards,
-Dean
