Which oil for my early T5 - do I use 70w gear oil ?
Hi all,
Just wondering what oil to use in my T5.
The ID tag on my T5 is 1352-034, which shows it is from a Ford 1983 SVO Mustang 5.0 V8. Am I correct to use 70w gear oil and not auto trans fluid as used in the later units ? Found this at http://www.moderndriveline.com/Techn...t5_history.htm
Thanks,
Dan

It will be interesting to hear, but I was under the impression they were all ATF, unlike the website you posted. I also didn't think that the World Class tranny came out until later in the 80s. It will be interesting to see what the T-5 gurus say. I will check my '83 factory manual, though.

T5's take ATF, install ATF and you will be fine. jimig@standardtransmission.com

GEEZ, I don't know what you have there. I checked my T-5 WC ID chart and the lowest number listed was 1352-114. Sure sounds like you have a NWC tranny there. If I was in your shoes I would either try to ID the exact vehicle the tranny came from and follow the OEM recommendations for gear oil or inquire at a reputable transmission shop before dumping lube into it. Like the article says "Gear oil is inexpensive, transmissions are not." Keep us posted.

As it appears to be from a 83 5.0 Mustang this would make it a NWC trans. Has anyone got the manufacturers specifications / recommendations for the trans oil in this vehicle?
I used this site for identification http://www.5speeds.com/t5/
Thanks
Dan

Anyone have the 83 Mustang recommendation - please
Would it destroy my trans if it should have gear oil and I use ATF ? I can understand gear oil being to thick for a trans that needs ATF, so is it just as bad using ATF when it needs gear oil?

Is the trans a "stock" T-5 ie: not been rebuilt or upgraded to the WC "Z"?
If upgraded you can use either ATF or 70w Red Climbing Gear oil, if it is stock they generally reccommend ATF although some of Ford's SVO's were a bit unique in their drivetrain components.
Being from NZ are there any Ford dealers that have a competent parts/service dept. close(rather lacking close to where I live )usually they can look up the information if they have the parts number and or vechicle it came out of .
On doing a search of several Mustang forums it seems the V-8 SVO Mustang for '83 used a pretty stock T-5 trans. These transmissions used ATF...'84 and later began to see more of what would become the "WC" and were beefier for the V-8's. hope this helps

We rebuild T5's on a daily basis, Z rated, WC, NWC and all in between. The only fluid we will ever put in any T5 is Amsoil Synthetic ATF. jimig@standardtransmission.com
