Default Leaking TKO600

It is my understanding that TKOs leak. Mine is leaking into the bell housing. No clutch contamination as yet. Is there a fix for this? The trany is only about a year old!! Thanks for any help.

Mine just dribbled a little on the outside. If it's leaking into the bellhousing you probably need a new seal for the input shaft.

How is your bellhousing alignment? Maybe it's causing it to leak prematurely.

also check your counter shaft cap, just below your input shaft. I have two of those leak for me.

Try backing the tranny out of the bell and check the front retainer bearing. Typically we see leaks there. On rare occasions I have seen the countershaft cap leak but not very often.
If it is the front retainer, hold the input shaft and remove the 4 bolts holding the retainer, and slide it off of the input. Whatever you do, do not pull the input out or let it come out. There are 17 needle bearings at the base of it and if you move the input out of the case they will almost always fall into the main case. Then you will have big problems
Once the retainer is removed, clean off the old sealant and clean the mating surface on the case and re-seal it with Anerobic Sealer #518 made by Loctite available at your local parts store. Be sure to line up the Oil Pocket on the inside of the bearing retainer with the oil hole on the top of case(12:00 o'clock position where the retainer meets the case). BE SURE TO RE-USE THE EXACT AMOUNT OF SHIMS THAT ARE GOING TO BE INSIDE THE RETAINER WHEN YOU REMOVE IT. Or once again you will have problems(mostly just noise and slop).

Interesting fixes for these Tremec transmissions, I use to own Billyboy's car (DC COBRA). I originally had a TKO in it and decided to go with a lower overdrive unit with the TKO 600, that tranny in the car now is not even 6 months old and probably less than 200 miles on it, it now has the same very identical leak as my TKO originally. Although I was told there was no warranty on them, so I have come to the conclusion buy a Tremec tranny because they seem to be a really good piece and I really like them, but thet are also pretty much gauranteed to leak from factory oh did I mention "NO WARRANTY"

By the way that is a pretty good fix for that leaking front retainer, just keep in mind that will not work for about 99.7 percent of the cobra's out there. Cobras are very simple cars to work on you either have to pull the motor or dissasemble 50 percent of the car to get the tranny to just move.

Interesting topic. My TKO600 leaked from the front bearing retainer from the getgo. I had that fixed not once, but three times. The final time I had the tranny pulled apart and resealed every gasket and surface and it hasn't leaked a drop for a couple thousand miles. Me thinks Tremec has some work to do on these trannies. I agree with Don about liking them, but with continual leaks like this, it's not good.

Didn't realize it was that tough to work on those . Either way, the tranny has to come out if it's leaking. Try my suggestion when you get it out, should be fine after that.

Damn Jim, I will say you was persistent, fixed three times to cure the leak. I just chalked it up as the cobre was leaking to mark its spot in the garage. They did that to my first tranny trying to fix the leak, only one time though and it still leaked. So I just blame it on my car just being awnry and wanted to mark its territory, any way aren't cobras suppose to be loud, obnoxious and hateful?

I had mine apart before i installed it to replace the input shaft with a shortened input shaft. I believe it is leaking at the bearing retainer.

Please tell me more about the amount of anaerobic sealer to use, and any other tips about using the sealer.

Thanks for all the help. Cobra guys (and girls?) are trully a family.I will probably R&R the tranny after Christmas. After ONE reseal and it fails, I will be going to a different manufacturer!! Any thoughts, suggestions Borg Warner,GM, Ford,Etc. Even a six speed?! I will not live with a leaker!

Put about a 1/4" bead around the surface that seals around the input hole in the case and around the outer rim. A little tip about the sealer is it will be easier to use if it is room temp. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Most of the GM and Ford transmissions are made by Tremec and Borg Warner was bought by Tremec also. As for a six speed you will want to make sure you have enough room in your tunnel area because the 6 speed is quite a bit larger than your 5 speed. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Thanks Jimi, Glad to have your support. I will take pictures when I pull the trany and post them as I follow your instructions. Might help others with leaks.

That would be great. I have a slight leak on the front of my TKO 600 (leaked with 30 miles on it), doesn't drip into the bellhousing, just down the tranning. Very annoying but when I just spent $1500 on a new tranny. I'm planning on addressing it AFTER I get the car through paint. That way I can drive it to a shop so they can look at it.

Any info ahead of time would be great!!

Isn't this sad! This would be almost unheard of from a Japaneese manufacturer! Is Tremec ISO9000 certified? I dought it! We should send all our repair bills (copies) to the president of Tremec. I will find his name and the address and post it!
