Question tko600 problems 2nd to 3rd shifts.

we posted this on the temporary site but i cant find it so here we go again.our 2nd to 3rd gear shift is nearly imposible while hard on the gas ,i looked at the other treads and we havent broke it in on automatic tranni fluid, im not sure if we should drain and go back and do that??we didnt put in the gm mtl but we did buy an equivelent made by pensoil i think. It doesnt seem to work if i let the tranny do all the work as some have suggested to just finger tip it into gear, lord knows iv tryd. this tranni only has about 5 hours of race time on it being drags20 runs or so 5 or 6 autox,s and a sat road corse sesion at Runngun, any ideas??? thanks Bill o yea all the other shifts are great no problems..

Default Not good Bill

WillBill3 It could be a rail or fork problem. Sound like the 1-2 rod is not going back to center and will not let the 3-4 rod move until it is centered. You have a couple of weeks, Pull trans and find a certified T-56 trans shop. There are 2 other ideas also. Send to G-Force and let them install the updated kit and blue print the guts, there are a couple of other companys that do the same updates. I have had very good luck with G-Force.Rick Lake

Aren't the TKO's very sensetive to the fluids used?? I was told to only use the recommended fluid or hard shifting could result...

I would recommend changing the fluid to Amsoil sycromesh, it holds 5.28 pints. Also you might try switching to a aftermarket shift top, they can improve the 2-3 shifts by shortening the overall throw. What RPM's are you turning during your 2-3 shifts? jimig@standardtransmission.com

TKO 600 already has the short throw shifter in it.

True the original shifter is made by Hurst but when shifted fast it can still cause a missed shift. jimig@standardtransmission.com

it has a Pro 5.0 shifter and pretty high revs 6000 +.Funny you should mention rpm if your just cruising around it goes in 3rd if im off the gas . im shifting at high rpms in 1to 2nd ,I also seen i can go 2nd to 4th and only drop about a half sec off my qaurter time by not using 3rd,but if im going to track the car in a couple of weeks @runngun i really need that 3rd gear on corse

Bill.
I have had the same problem with my car since inception, at about the same RPM range as you, I was told the quick shift is the problem and told pretty much the same as you .....fingertip the shift, that is hard to do when every other gear lets me bang it right into gear. I tried the fingertip (so to speak) shift and it works. All I really do now is shift more carefully, if that makes sense. I just let the shifter do the work and dont push it towards fifth at all, actually have to purposely guide it to the left. As stupid as this sounds it has helped.

I know alot of folks witht he same prob even after the blueprint process. I am not real happy with having to shift it this way but I dont race enough to be bugged that much.

One last suggestion to me is to use Ultra shift or maybe it is slick shift available at performanceunlimited.com. I have yet to try this but I think I will give it a go. My 2 cents RYan

The problem you are having is because of the rpm's you are shifting at, TKO's do not like to be shifted above 6000 rpm's.

There are some things you can do to the TKO internally to make them shift at a high RPM. jimig@standardtransmission.com
